Man, all of you are missing out, the books are excellent IMHO. And I personally don't think the HBO special detracts from them. For me I love seeing the maps having a visual reference for all I have in my head. Book to film I think it is a good transfer. There is so much to the characters the series has no choice but to go slow. As it is you are missing out on some things if your not paying attention, I would say HBO did a good job of turning detailed writing into interpetable scenes.
Keep an eye on "The Hound", he is my favorite character, he's a onion.

It's getting darker, I'll give it that. Also, I think they're putting too much into this rivalry between the prince and the younger daughter. My prediction? They'll end up resolving things, and that's the daughter he'll marry.

Oh I'll definitely be reading the books. I learned the hard way though, (Fellowship of the Ring) that I enjoy watching the adaptation before reading the source material, otherwise I get all wrapped around the axle about "what's different, what's the same".

It kind of looks that way. We'll see what shakes out soon enough. I think they're taking some liberties with the story line, too. I need to read the damn books!
