We're talking 2.5" laptop drives here as well. Notoriously crap and more abused then desktop drives.

Personally I expect 4-5 years from a drive.

And I've only had 1 harddrive failure in about 15 years, and that's probably close to 100 drives.

You're not going to get much of a new laptop for $300.

For what most people do with a laptop, you can get something more than capable for around the $350 range. Hell, I just bought a Dell Vostro V130 for $347+tax.

Sounds like a hard-drive failure but in my experience the suspect HDD usually becomes noisy and makes loud clicking sounds before it fails completely. Have you noticed any of this? If Winblows is corrupted it normally (from my experience) tries to boot into safe mode and blue-screens during boot over and over. If it is a HDD failure....good news is new ones are CHEAP as hell.
