      We're talking 2.5" laptop drives here as well. Notoriously crap and more abused then desktop drives.

      Personally I expect 4-5 years from a drive.

        And I've only had 1 harddrive failure in about 15 years, and that's probably close to 100 drives.

          thanks guys for all the input. I'm just gonna put a new hard drive in it. I like the laptop I have and don't really need anything newer.

                Sounds like a hard-drive failure but in my experience the suspect HDD usually becomes noisy and makes loud clicking sounds before it fails completely. Have you noticed any of this? If Winblows is corrupted it normally (from my experience) tries to boot into safe mode and blue-screens during boot over and over. If it is a HDD failure....good news is new ones are CHEAP as hell.

                        yeah i'm gonna look into buying a new hard drive soon. is HP bad about their hard drives going out or just about the norm as any other brand?
