my hp laptop that's about 3 years old crapped out on me again.

About a year ago it started giving me an error saying "operating system not found" but it would let you try to start it anyway. sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't eventually it just stayed on that message. i had to put the recovery disk in and start all over.

Now it's doing it again and i haven't been able to get it to start up. (it has power and all that but keeps giving you the same error) for now i may do the recovery disk again (i have all my files on my external hard drive thank god) just because i don't have the money for a new one.

Anywho would this be more of an HP problem or a windows vista problem? i ask because when i finally can buy another one i don't want to run into the same problem.

personal opinion would be that if the computer does what you need it to then just spend $100 and upgrade to Window's 7 and see if that solves the issue.

As a general rule - Hard drives only last 3 years.

Correct. I'll add that if you frequently shut down and restart a PC, that decreases the hdd life as well.

                  Right....

I have 8 year old hard drives that I occasionally spin up and use.

I have also used the same hard drive running constantly for 5 years. (old small drive, used for small backups)

                    Congratulations.

Consumer hard drives should only be trusted for 3 reliable years of operation.

I have hard drives that have "worked" for 15 years, but I am not going to rely on them.

And this is why I wrote a Batch file using robocopy to auto backup my data to a Seagate External HD daily.

Why not spend $300 and buy a new laptop??

You're not going to get much of a new laptop for $300.

Mine did the same thing for a while. I put a new hard drive in it and it's all good.
