Yesterday I upgraded my desktop to 18GB of RAM (I will max it out to 24GB eventually). My Intel Core i7-930 (not even the most powerful of the family) simply laughs at it.......
The screen shot is of VMware Workstation 7 running the following workloads:
4 x Win2k3 servers (running a domain controller, vmware vCenter, SQL 2005, and platespin Recon)
1 x EMC Celerra VSA (virtual server appliance.. acts as a virtual SAN device)
2 x VMware ESX 4.0 hosts (each with nested virtual machines that are not currently running)
2 x VMware ESX 4.1 hosts (each with nested virtual machines that are not currently running)
1 x VMware Management Appliance
1 x Apple OSX 10.6.6 (yes, I have a VM running OSX on a Win7 machine)
1 x Win7 x64
1 x Win2k3 x64 running vCenter 4.1 and SQL 2005

As you can see, the proc is just humming right along. I'm going to run out of memory before I lose CPU. BTW, these are not idle virtual machines. vCenter, SQL, Recon, and Win7 x64 are all working on various tasks.
I am planning to eventually upgrade to the Core i7-970 (hexacore) but at this point I'm not sure I would need to. Right now my biggest constraint is actually disk IO.
