  • PC to TV via HDMI: hearing static

Not sure if this should be here, or the media forum, but I think it's more PC related.

I have my desktop hooked up to my Vizio LCD via HDMI.

I am hearing a static noise that goes away when I put the volume to 0, but does not ever get any louder with a higher volume.

I tried both HDMI ports on the TV and both do it. When I change the TV to Component or AV it still makes the static noise, but when I unplug the HDMI cable, the static stops.

    Any ideas?

It seems there should be a RED/White audio in under the HDMI channel for bypass.

I am not running any additional speakers, only the TV.

Additionally, I do have sound coming through to my TV speakers, there is no issue with that... just the constant static noise.

I still have static when swapping over to component of AV, not sure that will fix the issue.

Are you getting normal PC audio through the HDMI or just the video signal?

If just the video signal, how are you bringing in the PC audio?

              What kind of video\sound card?

I am getting normal PC audio through the HDMI.

                It's a ENGT430

I would try a couple of things:

                  First, the normal crap:
                  1. Make sure any on-board sound is disabled via bios.
                  2. latest drivers for your video card

You are probably right about it being PC\cable based.

If the HDMI is a cheapy with crappy shielding and\or longer than 10 feet or so, I would look at the cable as a possibility.

(But usually shielding issues will get you a hum instead of static)

If you can rule it out, there is probably some grounding issue or crosstalk going on at the interface\card.
If you can, I would try another slot and see if the issue moves with it.

This might sound stupid, but how high is the volume set on your PC? I had a similar issue with running my PC through my surround sound system, it turned out my PC volume was very high . Turning it down solved it.

I've disable the on board audio and I still hear some static in the background.

I've also tried moving the HDMI cable away from other cables, like power.

The latest drivers are on the PC now.

Not stupid at all, i've heard of that too, but in my case the static stays at the same level no matter the changes I make.

This is strange. Yesterday I pulled out the HDMI cable and it stopped the noise and today I pulled it and it still makes the noise. I guess it's the TV...

that last post was a bit vague. You pulled out the HDMI cable from where? The input on the TV?

Before reading your last post my first thought is that you have a short in your card or on your MB somewhere. If you just got your sound card RMA it and try a different one.

I pulled it from the TV to disconnect the PC completed from it. A couple days ago I had tried that and the static stopped, but yesterday it still did have the static issue.
