  • will adding memory help?

I have a Toshiba sattelite laptop with 1.6Ghz processor, noticed there is only one memory card of 512 (system properties reads 448mb of RAM)
If I added to the other slot would this speed up my computer?

Usually I would tell you that it depends on what you are doing with your system. But if you have only 512, then I would say almost definitely.

In fact, if I were you I would check to see what the max memory is for your laptop. Usually it is 2 to 3GB is the max for a laptop that old. That kind of memory is cheap so you should take advantage of it.

If you'll post the model number, we can advise you on what to get, how much and where. I normally would have one go to http://www.crucial.com and run their scan tool to get specifics on speed and amount but the site is down ATM.

No bad advice given in this thread, only thing I have to add is that with a laptop that old - it is possible the memory maybe a little pricey. If that's the case it may make more sense to hold out for a new laptop.

Definitely max out your memory, I have an older Compaq Presario I still use off & on. I was going to get rid of it and buy a new one till I checked the memory and it too had only 512MB. I upgraded up to 2GB the max and it's like a new laptop. A great cheap thing you can do to make it better

Adding a faster, high capacity hdd will help w/speed too.

They'll price match newegg for a lil savings.

Even if it was a 5400 rpm Hard drive, the 1 I linked to has a 16 meg cache would make a tremendous difference over a standard notebook drive

Yeah, I agree and have been there done that as well. Just those 4200 rpm drives are such an ass whip. Even the 5400 are somewhat doable in comparison.

I know that's right. my father in law gave me an old ibm thinkpad with a 4200 rpm drive that sounded like it had bb's loose inside of it but still worked correctly.
