I love rally sims, and I also enjoy having the proper tools. A few months into Dirt Rally and it became apparent I would need proper controls to have any sort of a chance. First and foremost I needed a proper handbrake. A few months ago I was talking about torsion springs and jw33 suggested I try rat trap springs. That worked out great. I welded up a steel housing to test the idea of it, and it worked great. I started this morning on building a plastic housing I can 3d print which is a little more compact. Here is what I ended up coming up with.
This is the basic housing and ebrake with mount.
Here are the basic internals of the unit.
It's super simple, at the rear of the housing is where the pot sits.
I disassmbled an old Saitek joystick to get a USB host controller and potentiometer. Any $5 joystick will work. I made the base adjust on a slide so you can set the depth. Overall it's a simple design but it works great for games that can utilize an analog axis for the handbrake.
