  • How do I fix this?

    Dell, company issued, laptop.

Won't reboot. I'm afraid something is loose inside because I have to move and carry this thing a lot.

I press any key and it just goes through the same list and gives me the same scree. again.

Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

    hmmmm
check the boot sequence in the BIOS. Restart computer start hitting one of these immediately:ESC, F1, F2 or F10

Usually a company issued computer will be password protected though.

Can you get in BIOS? As mentioned above - seems like a PXE boot thing...remove that and try again.

Just googled too, seems fairly common. Let know what happens with BIOS and boot order change.....odd that it just started out of no where though. Could also just be sure the drive is connected right. It could be trying to PXE boot because no local media available to boot from. Meaning HDD is not connected right or dead.

I'm afraid to open this thing up since it is a leased item, i'm sure. But I may have to if it does it again. I'll let you know.

I think that is what caused the problem to begin with.

I'm connected to the server through a remote connection manager. We don't have our own server or internet here in the hotel. We are on a VSAT provided by the hotel not our own.

Ya since it is back up - be worth talking with your IT Support and getting permission. Reality is that if you're stuck you're stuck and will do what you need to anyway.

I vote dead/loose/disconnected hard drive, especially since it seems like it's intermittent. Hard drive probably just needs to be re-seated. PXE boot is probably second or third in the boot order in the BIOS, behind HDD and USB.

What model Dell is it? Depending on the model, there's not really a way they can tell if you opened it, as long as you don't break anything and screws don't have visible scratch marks, etc., unless there's a "warranty void if removed" label that would be broken if you took the bottom cover off. It would be hard to put one on the inside before closing it up, so it would be on the outside somewhere.

Oh she dead now. Time to take this bitch apart myself in my hotel room. I asked for a replacement and gave them options on getting it to me in Africa. Now all my work from Dakar last week to include all my photos and notes are all trapped in a laptop that won't turn on. Plus I have another assessment to start tomorrow that I can't access.

Pull the hard drive and pick up an adapter cable to rip everything off of it onto a new computer.
