  • 4K monitor recommendations

    Hi fellas,

I'm shopping around for a large 4K display for my home office. I've found a couple 40" displays but I don't have a lot of recommendations to work with beyond the customer reviews. Do any of you have a 4k display for your PC/Mac? Are there any gotchas I need to be looking out for?

I'm going to have a Macbook Pro for work soon. I'll be using that and whatever Win10 PC I end up buying for myself. These are the displays I've been looking at? I'm willing to go smaller than a 40" but no smaller than 32". I want to keep the price below $1000.

I can only recommend 4k when they are released with display port 1.3.

They just aren't there yet for gaming if that's what you're interested in. If you want it for pure display then make sure it does 4:4:4 chroma. If it does 4:2:0 then small text will look very very bad.

    Most cheap 4k big screens (500-1k $)only support 30 fps at 4:4:4 and 60 hz at 4:2:0. You want 60hz and 4:4:4.

I also suggest getting a real 4k monitor and not just a big screen.

I've had 4 4k Tvs since they launched and they just sit. There isn't even any impressive 4k video content readily avaliable and before you say ugh netflix.. 4k netflix looks like absolute shit or any streaming 4k service for that matter.

    Usually a good 4k monitor will run 800 for a 28-32 inch.

Make sure its a newer macbook pro, I dont think they supported 4k until 2013 or maybe mid 2013 models came out.

I have a Samsung 4k monitor that looks amazing and the resolution is ridiculous for doing linux stuff.

I also have a 75" 4k Samsung tv as well, its fucking crazy amazing, shit looks like my computer but from the couch.

What do you plan on doing with it?

I love this comment on the Philips
*Caution: This monitor has huge pixels, and 4~6 DEAD PIXELS are NORMAL from manufacturer.

MacBook Pro will be brand new from the new job. So I think I'm good there. I won't be doing any gaming. I want real estate for large Visios and still have room for my other documents and such. I'd also like to get away from having multiple monitors. Right now I have dual 23" 2048 x 1152. They have served me well for the last 6 or so years but I'm ready to upgrade.

I do plan to watch videos on this thing...

          I didn't know about display port 1.3. I'll look further into that. Maybe I'll just go for a 34" 3440 x 1440 type display.

I can say that since I dumped 1080p and under I have had ZERO eye strain problems. I used to have a lot.

I have the Acer 4k 28" 60hz gsync screen and it's awesome. Great for gaming, even better for work.

Does anyone know of any 40" displays that fit this criteria? I'm having trouble sorting through specs on Google.

Well, I ended up going with this. A curved LG 34inch WQHD (3440 x 1440) display. It has two thunderbolt ports, two HDMI2.0 ports, and two Display Ports. My old HP desktop with an AMD card has enough juice to play full screen movies on it too. It also has AMD FreeSync but my current GPU doesn't have that capability. I'm not sure if the Macbook Pro I'm getting from VMware has the AMD graphics or not.

It's a nice update for my office setup. I'm thinking I'll upgrade my home system next and perhaps keep my current 23" displays as well for a larger setup overall. I figure those displays are still great for email and monitoring my lap.

I saw one at Costco, Vizio 43 in. UHD LED LCD for $439
My old crappy computer won't work with it tho, tried my LCD TV on the HDMI port, it shows the bios, Windows logo while loading, but when it should show the login screen, it's just blank.

Ives been looking at dual monitors for the business, but I also have been looking at the LG monitors as posted above, and man they look sweet but i cant seem to cough up that much cash for a monitor like that. I don't do gaming, just simple business stuff. So might just end up getting a cheap brand TV from Walmart and use that as a monitor.

If your not playing games or watching 4K movies, dont get a UHD monitor, waste of money. Get a good lce led and youll be just dandy, and save $$$

Keep an eye open for last years models. They are dropping in price. There are 34" monitors selling for $500 with similar performance. The main reason I got this one was the dual Thunderbolt 2, dual Display Port, and USB 3 ports. My MBP can easily power this thing and I can also attach my surface pro 4 to it. There were a few other features that I liked as well. But those Thunderbolt 2 ports were the main selling point.

A 4k monitor has the resolution of four 1080 monitors. There are benefits other than video and games to having dense resolutions. You can probably get by with just one monitor instead of two. I dont know why people think they need two monitors anyway, I still sport just one.
