Actually, we just bought the TIvo OTA Roamio DVR and have been really happy with it. It has Netflix, Amazon and some other apps. Apparently it also can be accessed on your phone, but I haven't messed with that yet.
Apparently Tivo Bolt is pretty much the same but can search on all channels AND online content.
In the beginning, the TiVo set-top box was just a digital video recorder. You’d look over a list of upcoming TV shows and movies on the channels you get, and click Record for each one you want to capture. You didn’t know or care what time or channel they’ll be on. Then, on playback, you’d skip 30 seconds at a time, fast-forward, and so on, using the world’s best-designed remote.
I like the Fire Stick as well but only use it for basic stuff, for now. I really need a device that works best for NHL games, I think if I can figure that out I can get rid of DirecTV, then it's a matter of convincing the wife. We rarely watch anything other than sports live anymore anyway.
Roku for the best interface, search engine, and the innumerable amount of public and private channels. Roku also recently added StarzPlay, which initially was just available on Fire TV. I have a 2 & 3. Best streamer out there IMO.
The Fire TV limits it's search to Amazon content only. It's not like Roku's search engine that polls all channel apps (even those not installed) when looking for a movie or TV show. Some Fire TV reviewers find that understandably greedy and annoying.
Chromecast doesn't have it's own physical remote. No thanks.
WD TV Live for full media file system support streaming content from NAS/HTPC.

You also can't stream Amazon content via chromecast.
I recall seeing that post. I think I got the hockey thing figured out now. There are two pretty good options that are only about $100 a season for good quality and support.
Next step is finding out if I can get all the channels I need for the wife. I also need to DVR/schedule recordings.
How does Plex play into all of this?
My DirecTV bill is $160 a month without the NHL season, which is another $130 (for the season). My contract ends in 19 days.
Plex is just an app. You need to have a HTPC or media server of some sort. You go out and download torrents, and you can use Plex to watch them via smart tv, smart DVD player, roku/FireStick/whatever. There are programs like couch potato that go out and do the downloading of torrents for you, but it still requires some work. Too much work for me, but I do watch Plex because I have a log in for a friend's Plex server. He does the work, I get to watch his content, and do no work.
