  • PS3 not reading discs

The drive on my PS3 is no longer reading any discs, did some research and looks like it could either be the laser on the drive or the controller card, if it's the controller then it'll be cheaper to replace the entire thing... if just the drive/laser then you can get one off of eBay and replace it fairly easily.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I bought a used 2nd gen 80gig PS3 from a pawn shop for 50 bucks last summer that wouldn't read discs anymore planning to tear it down and use its parts to fix my 1st gen 60gb that was overheating. After trying to rebuild my 60gb a couple times I finally realized the mainboard was defective and gave up. SO...I swapped the Blu-ray drive from my 60gb over to the 80gb thinking I would be good. NOPE. It took a bit of reading on the net to find out that I had to take apart the Blu-Ray drive and keep the original Blu-ray controller card that came with the 80gb PS3..and just swap the bare Blu-Ray drive itself. I DOUBT its the controller. On the drive that went out I tested a few things and found the actual disc spindle motor had gone out...the laser was working fine.

Really debating whether I should mess with it, or just throw it on craigslist for $100 as is and get a slim.

If you don't get it fixed I'd be willing to take it off your hands if the price is right. I'd like another one to use as a receiver for my media server setup.
