and they use pin 1 because it is apparently easier to solder onto then the + side of the coil and yet has continuity with the coil.

I still say that if the coil is in fact bad, then the coil needs to be replaced.

I would also venture a guess that any electronics shop could do the job for you if you brought them the coil.
