So, I decided to hook up my system to my 4k TV just as an experiment to see how it did. Much to my surprise, I was running GTA V on high settings at 50-60fps. It was very playable. I tried BF4, Witcher 3, Far Cry 4, Project Cars, etc.. all ran okay, not perfect, but they were playable. And I have to be honest, the res bump was incredible. So much so that I bought a 4K monitor and now I'm all in. I need to bump my GPU to match, and my assessment is the cheapest bet is to pick up a new motherboard and another 970 SSC. As much as I freaking HATE going back to SLI due to various BS compatibility problems, 4K gaming is pretty firmly in this territory at the moment. I would seem 2 970's in SLI should be pretty comfortable in most games at 4k. Anyone else taking this step yet?

4k consoles are a decade away imho."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

Hell, the Xbox is struggling to even run at 1080p right now. There's only a hand full of 1080p games available. 4 times that resolution? lol. It took 10 years to get to 1080p on consoles, and honestly, we're not even there 100%."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

The current gen of consoles (XB1 and PS4) are questionable if they can even display 4k video, let alone gaming. PC's need 1k in video cards alone to do it. Unless you plan on paying $1,500 for your PS5 or next gen Xbox, you're going to be waiting a decade."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

I'm also considering selling my GTX 970 and just buying a Titan X.
Sounds crazy, but honestly, with the price of a new mobo, and another 970, I'm at 500. If I sold my 970 I'd be paying a $200 premium for reliability and no bullshit SLI bug problems. And also, believe it or not, the Titan X runs a whole lot of games faster than 970 SLI's, and a few better than 980 SLI's. And it also would consume 100w less power. Looks like this is what I'm going to be doing.Last edited by CJ; 07-19-2015, 10:26 PM."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

I think I may just get a 980 Ti and forget about the Titan X, they seem to be identical as far as performance. Are you playing in 4k?"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

Go SLI 980s. 980s 4Gb VRAM is pushing it at 4k although. That's the only reason I sold mine.
Example on 980TI SLI: GTA5 max settings 5.5 GB VRAM very smooth.
Witcher 3 max settings 2.5 GB VRAM but very choppy.
The only difference I noticed from switching from 980s to 980TIs is that now I can run MSAA and max shadows with max grass without hiccups. O
Best thing is to have a 4k and a 1440p. A lot of games play bad on 4k but play flawlessly on 1440.Comment
Also I just ordered 2 of these for my 980TIs. Price is right and same performance as 1k custom loops.

Unless you can get a deal on an open box titan x @ microcenter + 30% off open box coupon. Don't do it and stick to 980 TI.
I can give you vram examples @ resolutions up to 5k if you are interested. The max i've ever seen my vram numbers at was 7.9GB @ 5120x3200, and that's me forcing the .ini to use as much ram as possible. GTAV uses at most 5GB @ 4k completely maxed out, well beneath 980ti's limit.
If you choose to go Titan X route, you have to keep the GPU temps cool enough to stop thermal throttling and keep your boosts clocks high. That's the only way to make this GPU worth it imo. Keep them cool enough to stay over 1400 when boosted is key. I don't plan on getting rid of my Titan but if i could do it again I would have just gone 980TI.Last edited by roliath; 07-20-2015, 09:50 AM.
