  • Ethernet switch question

Got my access point and it turns out none of my ethernet wall outlets are setup for internet, only phone. When I contacted the people that wired the house they said the junction box that is in the downstairs closet that has a bunch of RJ45 ports in it is for the telephone. He said in order to get ethernet to other rooms I would need to put the router in there and plug the connections into it. My router is in the middle of the house in the living room since that is where our cable also is.

My question is can I just plug the Cat5 cable from the router into the wall and use it as the input to an ethernet switch? Then I can plug the cables for the rooms I want wired internet into that switch?

Assuming the Cat 5 is already connected to your wall plates/terminals in an Ethernet pinout this is possible. Otherwise you may need to repin the terminal connections to get it to work.

It would be no different than having the switch right next to your access point.

Yeah, that's how mine is done. The router is in my downstairs bedroom but the patch panel is in an upstairs closet. I have a switch in my room that connects my laptop, PS3, and Vulkano to the router and a wall plug; another switch in the closet that connects all the rooms; and a third switch in my office that goes between the wall plug and my office computers.

I get 85 Mbps down/95 Mbps up on all computers (FiOS); there's no difference between my laptop connected through my office or directly to the router.
