  • Computer upgrade

I built my pc in March 2010. I'm wanting to do some upgrades but I really don't know if I even need to... Anyways I just preordered GTA5 for the PC.

    Here are my current specs
    -i5 750 stock 2.66ghz currently running at 3.3ghz
    -mobo Biostar TH55XE
    -G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
    -Crucial M4 128GB SSD
    -Corsair? 850watt power supply
    -GTX 260 video card

Does anything seem to be a bottle neck in my current setup? I hate to spend a grand and just have a marginal performance boost.

do you think my ram clock speed is on the low end or just the fact it's only 8gb? I've been looking at getting a better GPU for a while. Just unsure what I want.

Ram speed, but w/out researching it, I'm not sure what your mobo supports. As for the gpu, get the single most powerful one you can afford.

Get a nice GPU and more RAM at least 8GB. I have 16GB and I can run two world of warcrafts and bf4 without it bottle necking

Or you can sell me that computer for cheap and build a nicer one I need a new work computer at work

I do have 8gb of ram. I just wrote it out funky. I have 4 total of 2gb sticks.

8gb is plenty based on your stated use.

Your cpu is going to bottleneck anything really. Look into upgrading that before you upgrade to a newer GPU.

The 970s were false advertised to have 4 GB of vram but have proven only to produce 3.5 FYI. A lot of people are returning them.

I've been following this since I have 970's, but I haven't really seen people returning them only talks of returning them. Unless they JUST purchased them.
TECHNICALLY the card has 4gb, but due to the way its partitoned performance will drop like a motherfucker when accessing the last 500mb of vram. Shouldn't affect 1080p users but will affect 1440/1600/4k as i've tested this at home. ( i didn't trust that program that was released to test vram).

But back to the OP, your board is going to limit that 780 to pcie2.0 and the i5 750 is really long in tooth.

I'm coming from a worse starting point than you (E series dual core). I was lucky enough to get the MSI GTX970 over Xmas and finally got around to completing the upgrade this week.

I pieced it together with the 8gig kit instead and paid $611 before rebates including the fan!

This put my total upgrade cost a shade under $1k. Hope this helps!

This scared me so I googled it. Doesn't look like it's going to hurt my performance much. I'll upgrade the cpu and mobo soon also.
