  • I need a new TV.

Man have things changed since 2007. I plan to pick one up on black Friday. It's a replacement for a 50 inch Sammy 1080P 120hrz LCD. The Panny plasma's where the way to go the last time I researched. Now there is LED, Smart TV, 4G Ultra HD, 3D. Is there one clear manufacturer ahead of the competition? Also, are the new features/types worth it or should I avoid certain ones? TIA!

Hard to beat a Samsung in picture quality. I'd just go with a Smart Samsung in the size of your choosing. I know I wouldn't bother with the gimmicky curved bullshit and I wouldn't spend the money on a 4K display yet. I also like the Sharp 70", which will probably be my next display to replace my aging 60" plasma.

I would like to take a moment to dissuade you from purchasing a Panasonic. Those fuckers have crammed adware in their Smart TV firmware versions since 2012. When you hit the volume up button, you see an ad under the volume level indicator. When you go to the app center on the TV, a video ad plays that covers the little channel preview box so you can't see what is on the channel you are on while browsing through the apps.

I know there is an option in the menu settings to turn the banner ads off, but that still leaves the ads in the app center. And even if you can turn them off, I find the idea of pre-programming ads in a TV's firmware in the first place extremely revolting.

You already paid for the TV, so fuck those guys for trying to make more money off of you on the back-end, and slowing down your Smart TV's processing power as a byproduct.

Samsung. Their customer service is top notch. I had a Tv go out about a month before the 2 year warranty expired. They sent out a tech to my house to fix it and slapped another two year warranty. It took one phone 5 minute phone call to make all that happen.

Good to know about the Panasonics. Thought about another Sammy but the capacitor problem they had makes me hesitant to get another. However, they might be the way to go if they are the lesser of all the evils.

I've got a 60" Panasonic Plasma that doesn't have that problem, but I got it in late 2011. I am very underwhelmed by the Panasonic bluray player that came with my surround sound though, and will likely change that up at some point. The TV is great, though.

Edit: I'll never buy a Sony TV again. 55" LED TV lasted 6 months then went out. Had to wait for a month for them to replace it with a refurbished unit, and it was the only TV in my house. Those fuckers can die in a fire.

It's kind a moot point, since they can be easily be disabled in the advanced menu. I have a late model 2011 Panasonic plasma that is ad free. I wouldn't let the ad issue deter you from making a purchase. It's pretty hard to match the picture quality of a Panasonic plasma. It certainly would be a night and day difference stepping up from a 120Hz Samsung LCD. Sony has built in ads on some models as well. This is just the way the industry is trending.

If they are adding adware I wouldn't buy one out of principle.

I agree with the people above. Samsung seems like the way to go. With that being said I have Samsung and LG monitors and TVs and both brands seem to be top notch. No issues with either and both have very good picture Quality.

As far as the curved TVs.. they do look amazing but not worth the extra money IMO. and 4K is still a bit pricy and most providers do not have 4K in cable services (that I know of) but in the next few months I think 4K will start to be much more readily available as far as viewing sources.

Any idea how much longer I have to him-haw around about replacing the 50" Samsung plasma I have now(even though there's nothing wrong with it)with a 60-65" plasma before the plasma is a thing of the past?

I've had it since '07 and it's been an awesome tv. I'm going to be pissed if something happens and the plasma boat has sailed.

My Panasonic Plasma (60 inch) is still rolling along and the picture has never been better. I even bought a new LG Plasma smart TV from MicroCenter earlier this year and the Pana is still better as far as picture quality goes. and its 5 yrs. old. Of course the Pana cost me right at $3K and the LG was $600.00...
