  • Need help. Win 7 not connecting to the internet!

Once again I need some help from the board. My niece's Dell Desktop won't connect to the internet. Boot up and everything looks fine, not getting a LAN error but neither IE or Chrome will connect. Tried Ping'ing out and fails. So I started by releasing and renewing IPCONFIG as well FLUSHDNS. Still won't connect. I even swapped in a known working NIC even though the installed one didn't show to be failing. I also tried restoring a restore point from September but it failed. Hadn't tried another one though but I will.

Any other ideas what else I can try?? Might try a new Windows User but I'm stabbing at the dark now.

Your absolutely positive the router/modem is fine?

Well, I've got two desktops and two laptops connecting just fine to my modem/router setup so I think I'm good.

Is it pulling the same gateway?

router setup so only a certain amount of connections are available? or a whitelist of known devices?

My desktop did this recently. The date was not set correctly and caused the Internet not to connect. Check the date and time.

                  That's a sign of a deeper issue.

I had to replace the battery as well. Had been in storage the last two years.

I'm not sure how to check that. When I bring up the Network connection window to check the Gateway it brings up the Network properties windows as detailed here.

No that shouldn't be an issue. I'm just using a basic password for the router. Plus this connection issue was happening in two different locations so I don't think that's the issue.

Another thing to add is that I am not able to access my router on that computer either which I'm guess is part of the problem. One other thing, my niece mentioned is she kept seeing something about IPv6. I haven't seen it either.

I've heard of that happening before, mostly with secure sites as it has to check against the security certificate. Not an issue here though, date and time are correct.

You can disable ipv6 in the LAN settings. Is the router set for ipv4 only?

Is there a question mark or x next to the network adapter in device manager? Have you tried using a different ethernet cable?

OK I'll take a look for that next.

Negative, that was what I was expecting (I've had NIC's go out before) but didn't see. It has a NIC built into the MB so still thinking that it was bad, I swapped out another NIC from a known working computer and still nothing. Same goes for the ethernet cable, I swapped computers from a known working ethernet cable and still not working. I don't think swapping another one will make a difference IMO.
