No, we're still on the price point argument. The machines ability to run something at that level shows the power of the unit as a whole to perform multiple tasks, not just gaming.

Why would you spend $800+ (used) for a mac that is weaker than a $300 (new) pc?

    Logo? Fanboy?

Cheapest mac unit that is equivalent to a desktop that you can buy right now:
    $599.00
2.5GHz Mac mini (dual core i5)
    Specifications
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    4GB memory
    500GB hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    OS X Mavericks

memory, hard drive, and cpu eventually upgradable, but not on the cheap.
    That's what you've got.

    $299.99

AMD 5600K Trinity 3.6GHz Quad-Core APU with Radeon HD 7560D,
    MSI A55M MOBO,
    ADATA Premier Pro 128GB SSD,
    WD Blue 1TB HDD,
    HyperX Fury Black 8GB MEM,
LOGISYS Computer CS301BK Case with 480W PSU

Upgrade whatever the fuck you want, whenever you want. Comes with a fucking ssd, and 1tb of space. Twice the ram, and can actually run star craft 1 without needing a defibrillator.

You're still assuming what the end user is wanting out of their computer. Why are you so worried about what other people are doing? Small dick? Broke?

Well it's like this. There are a lot of people out there, myself included, that don't know or care about all those hieroglyphs you posted. I have an XBox if I want to play video games. I want to turn on my computer, have it work, and that's about it.

You really can't have such an outlandish expectation with a PC, because you're going to get 500 viruses, despite paying extra for ad block, and whatever all the other shit you need to find, and keep updating, then finding a new program for, because there's one MORE virus that's new that the old shit can't deal with yet. I'm sure that's all really exciting to someone doesn't have anything better to do with their time, but when I look to spend money on something, I really just want it to fucking WORK.

You see, these purported savings don't really mean jack shit when you've got to buy a new PC every two years, and all the programs to try and squeeze those two years out of it so it doesn't crash. I've had a MacBook Air for 4 years, and it hasn't gotten a single virus, and is still going strong; even after being bounced around the hot or freezing trunk of a car for roughly 20,000 road trip miles. I'll never buy another PC after owning this thing. Best computer investment I ever made. It's all about the brand and some sort of idiotically perceived elitism though, rather than it just being something that fucking WORKS, which is more than you can expect out of a PC.

Eric, those are rather embellished claims you're touting. My desktop of almost 3yrs has had not one issue that wasn't user inflicted, ie: I set the core voltage too low for the OC I'm running, yet it serves as a media server for 40+ppl, home server for 3 laptops, 3 phones and 2 tablets, as well as typical pc usage. It also served as a backup box for all my pc's and a couple friends, it runs win 7 and has never been infected, rather it's been instrumental in the repairs of countless pc's, Mac included.

Then there's my other desktop running mint 14 that serves as a build box for Android firmware for multiple devs.

Both also run under 100% 24/7/365 doing work for Stanford Uni by participating in Folding@Home.

Edit:My main pc is over 3yrs old, the other is 4+.

Those are my experiences with roughly 10 PCs from the early 90's until late 2010 when I purchased this unit. You work on computers professionally; your results may vary. You also complain about Apple at every chance you get, so there's that.

Windows has come a long way. It's pretty stable with just about every hardware configuration you can throw at it now. Apple is no longer the runaway winner for reliable and easy to use OS, and there are more than a few manufacturers building hardware as good as, or better, than Apple's. You're probably better off getting a good Windows PC and saving some money.

At one client we have, we recommended they buy MacBooks for their users because they click on random links without thinking about the consequences, install adware on purpose because they wanted this toolbar's function or sticky notes on their desktop or some bullshit, and we were tired of fixing their junked up desktops/laptops. We warned them that it would be more expensive in both the short-term (because of cost up front since Apple doesn't like to discount their products) and the long-term (since apple is going proprietary EVERYTHING again), but they didn't care. Right now they are happy, but I can't wait to see their faces two years from now when someone asks to get a larger hard drive or more RAM in their shiny, brand new MacBook Pro.

I can support a Mac environment almost as well as I can support a PC environment, but I'm sick of seeing the debate about which is better, because it doesn't matter anymore. They can all do the same shit. If you're too stupid to not click on every flashy link on the internet, install a proper antivirus, run Windows update at least once a month, or do research on the proper hardware specs you need to do what you want to do, go see one of the "Geniuses" at the Apple store and let them up-sell you on a bunch of shit you don't need.

As much as people call out the Mac haters, I will say that uninformed users who blindly say Macs are better are even worse than the people that hate on Macs.

The reason I spend the money is easy.

                      * Native interface and shell similar to BSD and Linux for easy development.
                      * Snapshot backup and restoration integrated into all systems seamlessly backed up on TimeCapsule.
                      * AppleTV support for all devices including screen mirroring.
                      * iCloud support for all devices which sync's ( files, images, browser tabs, history, bookmarks, etc ) everything across my 4 devices.
                      * Easy to use device input ( aka the magicpad )
                      * Notifications and integration with social media more prevalent.

For me specifically, OSx is like having Linux but being able to do things like i'm on a Windows machine ( ie. install most software ).

The list for me can go on and on, but I am not trying to sell a product here. For doing normal tasks that I spend in front of a computer doing, Apple destroys every other product. I do however still use Linux Mint and Windows at home occasionally for other projects. If my sister were to ask me for a computer, I would most likely buy her a Mac because for 80% of the things that people use computers for, I find it less tedious and easier to maintain a Mac than other products.

I use both Windows and OSX depending on what I'm wanting to do at that time. Yes...OSX is better for people who don't want to "mess with" constantly updating java, antivirus, malware software. Those people have found that they can press the power button...wait less than a minute typically on a Macbook and be fully running...I've been using Macbooks and my Macbook Pro since 2010 and have yet to experience any kind of virus or malware issue. I've probably either "cleaned" or flat out done full re-installs on several dozen Windows computers for friends or family because of malware or viruses..and yes...that includes my own Windows computers because it is almost inevitable...and in fact almost impossible for a windows computer with internet access to NOT get "something" whether it be spyware/malware or a virus. I'm pretty good at keeping MY Windows computers clean and working but its something I am always cautious about when using them. I can boot up my Macbook Pro without a care in the world about viruses or malware...go to a million websites that would absolutely MURDER any Windows PC...surf as long as I want...and have no fear about problems using my Mac. To each their own. They each have their pros and cons. I'll keep using both...and I'll keep recommending Macs to my friends who constantly ask me to fix their virus/malware infected machines because it is a fucking nuisance to keep fixing them OVER and OVER and OVER again.

All I've learned from this thread is that Mac's are better for looking at porn.

Actually your best bet is either a Linux system running a Mac virtual machine or a Mac running a Linux virtual machine.

I've toyed with a mac for the past few years, I LOVE the hardware, osx is not bad, love the unix backend but some of the gui stuff bothers me. I finally decided to go all in and got a 13" rMBP to replace my work and home computers and force my self to give it 100%.

At this point I am really digging it, I hate windows 8 with a passion and osx is much more productive for me. The stability is good, not great but good, I've had a few app crashes, they appear to be poor coding on the developers part (OneNote, HipChat). I did have a kernel panic running parallels which also may have been poor coding on the devs part.

Everyone bitches about the cost but in laptop land they are not any more expensive than a PC IMO. Where can you get a thin, light, HiDPI, 10hr batt life, 3 display out, backlit keyboard, fastest SSD on the market with a top notch build quality for much less than $1300 in PC land?
I had a XPS13 and it sucked build quality wise so I sent it back, I picked up the machine and it made cracking sounds because of the gap on the bottom cover, ugh.

I am not a fan of the integrated graphics, when you run the retina screen it has to resample everything and there is a huge performance hit, 90% of the time I use the laptop connected to 2 or 3 "regular" monitors, including a 2560x1600 dell 30" and the performance is much much better.
