  • Anyone good with OS repair?

I was downloading iTunes two days ago in order to access lectures on iTunes U for class, and my computer blue screened and then eventually restarted. Upon restart, I was presented with a black background and my mouse cursor. Nothing is accessible including ctrl+alt+delete or any other function.

I found an iso image online and created a usb repair disk and am able to get the machine to function in the repair tool; however, I cannot repair anything because of the following error:

the system cannot find the file specified 0x80070002

I have googled the crap out of this and looked at every solution online, but none of them seem to apply or work. When looking in the directory, there is not a 4th user profile where one should be (as in the only user profile that is not for networking). I have no idea how I would add this profile if I needed to as I am functioning with minimal tools. Much of what needs to be done will likely have to be done in the command prompt, and my experience with that tool is limited.

I appreciate any help, and if anyone lives in Dallas or close to and would like to meet up to take a look I can buy you lunch or we can discuss another form of payment. I do not trust computer repair places as their solution is almost always "reinstall the OS and lose everything."

    Thanks in advance!

    Edit: For computer specs

    Alienware Mx18
    8gb ram
    2x 500gb hdd in raid
    quad core i7 processor
    dual nvidia gtx460s

When was the last time you reformatted? Also have you tried a system restore?

Cant system restore because of that missing file.

Being a raid setup, it's gonna be difficult to fix. Are you certain one of the drives didn't fail?

No, as I have very few options to check. From what I can tell, all of the data is still on the drives, but I would likely have to remove the hdds to check them and use another computer to confirm (though I am out of computers now as my desktop just died 2 weeks ago).

Chances are it has a hdd test in the bios, at least every Dell product I've worked on did. Check there and see if it does.

Running the 30min ram test now as well, but everything came back clear.

Have you put the OS cd in and tried to repair it that way yet?

Machine never came with a cd as no new pcs do anymore. Even my 2 month old ultrabook didnt come with anything.

                    Edit:

Everything passed in the advanced hardware test.

Yes, but they do come with a OS recovery image. Have you tried that the option?

I'm willing to bet you're gonna have to recover the data and rebuild the array.

Without access to the OS, I cannot use anything on the PC.

Well now I have acquired a screen which is asking for the installation disk. Since I have no disk, and dell wants $278 to talk to me, I guess i am screwed.

You do know you can burn your OS disk?

                              What OS are you running?
