  • Samsung - Capacitor Replacement?

My 50" Samsung plasma is a dinosaur, a 2007 unit. It's been perfectly fine until last week, when it got the click of death and won't power on. It seems that 99% of the time this is a failure of an undersize capacitor on the board. It seems to be a widely known issue, and Samsung issued a warranty for a bunch of TVs including this one.

However, the recall ended last September, and now they will only cover the cost of parts and not the labor for replacement. That's pretty damned annoying.

They will send a tech out but it will be $168 to have them repair it. I just wanted to check here first to see if anyone is willing/able to do the repair for less.

    Much appreciated.

Yeah, the DIY steps involve soldering on the mother board which I'm not comfortable doing. If no one offers, I might nut up and try it myself.

if it's a thru-hole style cap it should be easy as sin to replace. I haven't done much surface mount soldering, but if i can do it so can you.

Stupid easy. I cant solder for shit but a dude sells kits on ebay to replace them mine came with 8 new capacitors some solder and a copper thing to suck up the old solder. It was 13 bucks shipped. Just goto ebay and type in your model#

There was a lawsuit against Samsung a couple years ago because of faulty capacitors. A lot of info and youtube videos on how to do it, super easy. I replace them on my 55" Samsung lcd a couple years ago. Capacitors are cheap, .30 cents a piece.
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

Samsung Electronics America has agreed to repair LCD, Plasma, and DLP TVs built between 2006 and 2008 that malfunction due to faulty capacitors in class-action settlement.

Wow .3 cents a piece? That's like, over 300 capacitors for one dollar!

Right... I mentioned that. They are no longer replacing the capacitors for free; instead they are now only covering the cost of parts. Labor charges are to be picked up by the consumer. Total BS.

Okay guys, the cheapass in me is coming out. I bought the ebay kit. Wish me luck.

Wish I had seen this earlier. Fry's has the caps for $1.99/piece. I got a "broker" 52" Samsung LCD from a client that was having the same issue. Had 2 bulging capacitors. They are stupid easy to replace. . a 52" LCD for $4.00.

What part of town are you in? I might could replace it if you can point out the bad cap.
I rebuilt the board in that old asteroids machine i posted about. As long as its a through hole style its pretty easy.
