  • Need help again. Locked out of computer

Fortunately not me but a friend of mine asking for help. It's a Dell Latitude e7240 running Windows 7. She's locked herself out of the computer and can't get logged back in. I tried every combination that she thought it might be but no luck.

Thought about just restoring the computer since it's fairly new and she doesn't have much on it but didn't have much luck finding instructions online (thought there might a key combination or partition on the HD to restore from). She does have a Restore Disk but it's for Windows 8 and this computer has Windows 7 on it. WTH?

Anyway, thought I'd ask here before calling Dell.

I Love that utility! It's enabled me to help more ppl than just about anything else I've come across.

Yes that boot disk has been a life saver for a long time. Yet you see folks charging a fair amount on CL to use that or some other utility to blank a password

So I have everything installed on a USB flash drive and set to boot to it and that works. Press enter from the first menu and it does a few things and is getting stuck at Booting the kernel. Any ideas?

Ohh! Make sure Secure Boot is disabled in the bios too.

Secure Boot is disabled. Burned the ISO to a CD-R and it's still doing the same thing.

Well fuck I'm giving up on this thing. Now it's not even reading my USB DVD drive although it was yesterday. Tried rebooting multiple times and plugging it into different ports and nothing. Went back into the BIOS and reset the bootup and then moved the DVD back to the top and still nothing. Just plugged into my Desktop to make sure it's working and it is.

Pull the hdd and put it in your pc, boot from the disc and try it that way.

Appreciate the suggestion but I've already returned it to her and told her to call Dell. Just a lot of weird issues with it and it really surprised me. But thanks everybody for the help and now I have another tool in my library to use. I'll have to play around with it sometime on one of my computers.

Did it originally come with Windows 8 and get downgraded to 7? A lot of IMEI bullshit to work around to get it to boot properly from USB or CD.
