Get a tablet, that's all you need for what you described. I love mine.

I've got a few spare systems as well. Don't forget to add around 100 to that parts list for a win 7 oem license unless you have technet or want to go other routes.

Android uses OpenOffice, I think iOS has a version called Documents. Both are great for basic tasks (read, minor editing, etc). Advanced tasks you should get the real thing. Also you will need to set up some sort of airprint if you are doing this from a tablet. Unless you are talking about Win8 Tablets like the Surface or Dell Latitude XT, if so I am now shutting up.

Redneck, were i5's or i7's cost prohibitive on his list? Or are you an AMD man?

For the budget AMD is more bang for the buck. The i3 isnt a bad low end cpu they just aren't cheap compared to amd.

Plus dvd burner for $15 on sale right now. They also have the Asus 23.6" for $139 plus a $20 rebate and free shipping. I just bought 6 of them too.

More cost prohibitive than anything. I like the value of amd, but I'm not a loyalist by any means. I have both(FX8120 and 3770k) and both fulfill their respective duties well.

The biggest pro to the amd apu is the strong on-die graphics. Imo, it far surpasses intel's offering in that respect and makes the cpu a great all-arounder for the vast majority of people.

Ok guys, pardon the ignorance, but all this tech talk is flying completely over my head.

If you guys were to recommend an off the store shelf unit, which would it be?
