  • Looking to buy a new computer.....

....actually, just the tower as my monitor is only about a year old. When it comes to computers I'm pretty much lost. All I know how to do is click the tab to this site.

Anyway, what do I need to look for as far as brand, features, memory, RAM, and anything else? This is mainly just a basic use computer for web surfing and kids' homework research but I would like to have good video and sound quality.

Also, before I forget, what is the purpose of an HDMI connection on a computer?

    TIA

Hmm, I guess that's important. Let's just say I would like to keep it at about $500. Can that buy me a decent computer?

Yes. Are you wanting to or willing to build, or do you prefer a pre-built pc?

Never thought about building one. What are the advantages to building one over a pre-built?

You get way more for your money when building, plus there's upgradability and no proprietary equipment.

The perk to building is an upgrade path as needed and getting exactly what you want. But this day in age, most pre-built can be had marginally less.
If you want me to put a parts list together for you, I'll be happy to do so.

Yes, only the mobo from them will work in the case and *when they fail, tend to be exponentially more expensive to replace that an aftermarket part. Plus the upgrade path is significantly more limited and there's no potential to OC should you get the bug.
