no thread yet? did anyone buy one of these things?


i preordered on amazon for no reason and it showed up. so i have one and i'm underwhelmed at the moment. i'll give it a chance but right now it is only a gaming machine with exactly zero games i am interested in.

more annoying than that, it is missing every feature that made the ps3 great. right now there is no DLNA media streaming of movies and music.

luckily the day one update allows it to play blu-rays/dvds but it's missing 3d blu-ray playback (which is something i usually don't give a flying fuck about, but i happened to receive life of pi in 3d yesterday).

so currently my $400 box does nothing.

roommate has an xbox one coming. hopefully it's less useless.

nah, the majority of what i saw was sold was in the $550 range.

i might throw it on CL for that but i think 3-4 months down the road they will have a game i want.

i'm just hoping they bring DLNA media streaming to the device in an update.

maybe. logically the answer is yes but what will actually happen... who knows:

The lack of 3D movie support at launch is especially odd as Sony has previously been an advocate for the technology. It has released 3D films, published 3D Blu-rays and pushed 3D-compatible PS3 games. And, obviously, you could play 3D Blu-rays on PlayStation 3.

There's no technical reason why PlayStation 4 couldn't support 3D Blu-rays and the option may be patched in at a later date - but there's no mention of if or when this may occur.

At launch, the PS4 requires you to install its day-one patch to enable standard DVD and Blu-ray play.

Blu-ray formats BD-ROM and BD-R/RE plus DVD formats DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW+2, DVD+R/RW+2 will then be playable.

The formats not supported are Blu-ray 3D, BD-R/RE XL and BD-RE ver.1.0

yup. i've used my ps3 + computer armed with ps3 media server for ~5 years happily. it has been one my best purchases.

but now, especially since the ps4 doesn't do shit, i'm about to retire the ps3 due to noise/heat/interface/controller for a $40 rasberry pi which actually does an even better job.

Interesting. I'd do that too, but I do play NHL 13 from time to time, so until it gives up forever I'll keep doing it this way.

my coworker has it. he loves it.

rasberry pi model b by itself is $40 and available from amazon now.
add $20 or so if you want a case + power supply.
add an sd card. you don't need much space, just install XBMC on it and tada, you are done.

there is a free app so you can control it from your phone too.
