Ways to speed up mother in laws laptop?

For those that suggested older macs I picked up an early 2008 15" Mac Book Pro 2.5ghz, 4gb ram and 250gb hard drive. With the new Mavericks OS it went from 3.5-4hrs on battery to 4.5-5hrs. I swapped out for a 128gb ssd I had but only paid $300 for the laptop and still very quick and useable for most.

I agree the deals are out there and a few year old MacBook that supports 10.9 is a worthwhile investment especially for family members.
