see what ram she has, it always speeds stuff up if their's too little

update the drivers from Dells site
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.

A fresh install of windows always helps

After you've done everything, put it on craigslist and sell it. Then go buy her a Mac so you don't have to deal with it again.

Yep....for a few weeks until it gets slow as shit again from malware and bloat windows updates.

2 gigs of ram is the issue. If it's using firefox, I would suggest switching to Chrome for browsing. Defragment the hard drive, clear all temporary files, allocate the maximum amount of virtual memory. Go through services.msc and turn off any non essentials. That should speed things up a good bit.

I did this too. I pretty much suck at computers but this ones a no brainer. All that will clog it up. But maybe he can add more ram to that one. And a faster hard drive for $60 those old ones that are like 80 giga are soooooooooo slllloooooooww

My old beater laptop is 4yrs old. It only has 2g ram. It's as fast (slow) as the day I bought it, but I don't click on every phishing link that's sent to me either.

I concur on everybody's mac recommendation. That's what we've put my wife's family in (including the wife) they're all tech tards

It's not just the phishing crap, it's standard issue ram hog programs and the windows bloatware. Most premades bundle all kinds of shit with them.

Thats why when I have to deal with windows I :

A: build my own (desktops) and install only what I want.
B: if working with most laptops...do a fresh restore of the OEM setup...then immediately spend the next several hours deleting all of the CRAP thats installed. ONLY then do I let windows do its 12 hours of updates.

IF you buy them new...yes they are. I see used Core 2 Duo Macbooks on Craigslist all the time for 100-300 bucks, and now even Microcenter is selling certified used Core 2 Duo Macbooks with warranty for $399. The most basic C2D Macbook has a 120gb HD, 2gb of ram, a DVD burner, Wifi B,G,N, Bluetooth, a VGA webcam, and the power management of OSX makes battery life superb..I routinely got 4-6 hours on my old Macbook and my late 2010 Macbook Pro with an SSD and 8gb of ram routinely goes for about 9-10 hours on battery.

Same here. I used to do that kind of crap for people, but I got sick of it.

More RAM + SSD, but it's just gonna get slow again with her using it.
