  • Ways to speed up mother in laws laptop?

Searched for an old thread on this and cannot find it using my phone. She has a Dell Inspiron 1720 that is crawling. I got her an external hard drive. Once I back everything up to the hard drive can I delete all of it from the computers hard drive? Any input is appreciated.

Just being honest.... And nearly 40 I can't claim to be in the young crowd anymore, I do know though that all this Crap on her HDD isn't helping things speed wise

I'm almost 40 too, and I've learned a few things...

top of the list is never volunteer to help the mother in law... especially with something that you're not familiar with! hell, especially with something that you ARE familiar with for that matter!

somewhere lower on the list is the fact that you're going to spend more in time/labor/frustration than it would cost to just buy a brand new laptop with equally shitty statistics/capabilities as that one

I agree on all fronts, just trying to help a 72 year old bitty out

Yes, once everything is copied off to external, delete from lappy. Run disk cleanup, defrag with auslogics-full optimize(iirc that's the name), install ccleaner and disable all the startup stuff that's not needed. Reboot, go to pcpitstop.com/betapit from IE as Admin, run the test and post the link from the address bar upon completion.

                        Just to build onto this.

After you've done everything, put it on craigslist and sell it. Then go buy her a Mac so you don't have to deal with it again.

As others said, I give up, she only has 2048 mb of memory. I told her invest in a MacBook Air.

Earlier this year I went through my wife's notebook that I bought her back in 2008. Deleted every program besides what was on there from the factory and virus protection and it ran like new.
