Cool, I really appreciate you answering my questions.

Alright, I got the xp up and rolling, and surfing the interwebz so I think I made progress. So I have the sata cables and a Molex to two sata power cable. Hooked it all up to the Asus mother boars. I can't remember the full string, but it was several numbers and letters and ended in LA which according to google was able to be used with sata ports on it. But I don't "see" either drive. I did unload the link tx redneck sent me to ans it appears to be the program that is on the western digital site.

Any way, there is talk of seeing the drive in bios and that it needs to be formatted. I can't see it so I can't format or partition. Not sure what to try next. I guess I will keep googling and reading unless someone has some suggestions what to try next.

Macrium is good, but unless something has changed, it doesn't create a bootable image. I have a program I'll PM you a link to.

macrium has a pe rescueboot. install it on your pc and go to other tasks.
i'm a noob and didn't crop anything out.

You can go about it both ways, drive clone to clone or drive to image and pull the bad drive insert new drive in its place, boot with rescue pe and put that image on the new hdd. this is assuming you have a spare hdd to save the image on.

I do have another drive I bought. It is 1 tb, the bad one is 750gb

So can I hook this up to the one that failed and make it work with the downloaded stuff in the link or do I need to use the other one with the working xp that I can't see the HDD when plugged into the sata ports on the mother board?

I can try. It would not open windows. It said it has a smart error so I got on my phone and googled it up. That is where I determined it to need a different HDD. I will see about getting it plugged back together on its original motherboard/processor. I am hoping it will recognise both HDD ans I can get the contents to copy a bootable image to the new to me one I bought.

This was our home desktop so a lot of crazy stuff gets clicked on. I have swung it back to a different date to correct problems many times. This is the first time I couldn't get it to open up windows.

Use HD Tune, it'll let you copy/paste, or put up a screenshot.

All vendors use different smart variables, there is no standard, so just because a website said its bad doesn't mean its bad. It shouldn't matter the computer you plug the drive up to.

How can I get it past the smart error and into windows?
At the least I would.like to get the pix and such off of it.

This screen then I press f1 and tried the fix windows startup but that didn't seem to help so I used the delete key to get to setup and got BOOTMGR. is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart

Have you tried to disable SMART?

Not sure how to accomplish disabling it.
I will look into it.

I'm running startup repair again as that seems to he how to get the bootmgr back.

Disabling SMART is in the BIOS, hit F1 and boot anyway and get a SMART output. You can also plug that drive up to any other computer that boots and get the smart data.

Would it not be wisest to get it imaged before anything else to reduce the risk of loss from a catastrophic failure

making progress I think

I have to give a hearty thank you to those helping. Not sure I am making progress but I seem to be. I also put a new fuel tank in the hobby car and worked on the valve body for i the hobby car transmission as well as went to a trunk or treat at church and a busted fright night at six flags last night.
