For some, Grand Theft Auto 4's multiplayer mode was a promise unfulfilled -- it had the open environment of a massively multiplayer online game, but none of the genre's persistent content. Rockstar is making amends by unveiling Grand Theft Auto Online, an independent counterpart to GTA5 with a few MMO components. While only 16 players can participate in a given session, they all have permanent stakes in the game world: they can raise cash, buy property and build a reputation that unlocks new gameplay. There are "ambient" events, and gamers can even design custom battles or races to share with others. The new title should also represent a break from Rockstar's usual business model, which emphasizes blockbuster releases with few (if any) updates. Although GTAO will be available for free to GTA5 buyers on October 1st and start off with that game's resources, it should receive a steady stream of new missions and purchases. Ultimately, the two GTA games may have little in common. Rockstar hasn't said whether or not it will charge players for any extras, but we wouldn't be surprised if they carry price tags.

        October 1st for PS3/XBOX 360

If it ever comes out on PC, they had better use punkbuster or something pretty tight, because the hacking is still rampant in GTA IV

                lol @ punkbuster being tight.

Nothing is perfect, hacking/scripting etc will always happen. You will have to deal with it, if it comes on the PC lets just wish/hope for dedicated servers.

I've only played gta far enough to open up all the land. Other than that its a free for all finding all the sweet jumps and blowing shit up.

It really depends on us, the gamers. If everyone switches to next gen immediately GTA 5 is a wash and they'll (rockstar) have to switch over. Since the ps4/one can't play current-gen games you'll have to keep your ps3 or 360 to play this.

I refuse to buy it on 360. If it comes out on the one I'll get it.

I like what they are doing with CoD: Ghosts in that respect. You still end up buying the game twice BUT if you purchase and play it on a current gen, then get a ps4/XBOne then everything transfers including the season pass if you buy it for current gen.

I think it would be a little more difficult to implement in GTA V though.

I've got my copy pre-ordered for the PS3, I'll buy it again if/when its released for PS4/PC. I'm pretty sure i'll enjoy the fuck outta this game.

BF4 is doing this too, I don't see it being that difficult since your profile is probably just an xml file somewhere on a server somewhere.
