          In theory it is real easy. Download program, plug phone into computer, run program, root done... then do the same for a backup program.

                      it's the version of android you are using where as the previous was called froyo which is short for frozen yogurt

                        As far as I have heard Droid X doesn't have Gingerbread, but if it does then that's likely why you are having issues rooting. You will need the latest clockwork to backup on gingerbread phones.

                            2.3.340 is still froyo. That is the system version and not the android version. Z4root should work without a problem.

                              1 click roots are junk IMO, that's probably your problem. All you need is an update.zip file, you just copy and paste it on to your phone in the root directory, reboot the phone in recovery mode and hit "reinstall packages" and reboot. If you were closer I'd do it for you in about 2 minutes.
