  • Shopping for a laptop.

Wanna get my wife a laptop that won't be outta date for a while. I have no idea what top of the line is nowadays. My friend just bought an alienware laptop for 2700 from dell.

Can anyone tell me what to stay away from while shopping around. Is windows8 that bad to avoid?

Things I have found in my search I need some insight on. Does Asus make a good gaming laptop? Like the g73 plus models?

Outside the alienware line from dell, are their other laptops decent?

IMO. if you don't get Windows 8, you're already out dated.

I don't know much about computers, but after going through 3 laptops(1 sony and 2 HP) at work I have Lenovo now and it has been great.

I currently have a Gateway and a Samsung. The Gateway is my primary laptop I've had for about 2yrs now, it's been great. My Samsung is still somewhat new, haven't used it much plus it has Windows 8. Spent less than $500 on each one, that's including maxing out RAM on each one after I bought them!

I wouldnt spend that much money on a laptop...that being said... I own a Macbook Air. Its $1000 and it works great. I have never been an Apple person but honestly it is very nice. Im running Parallels and can run Windows in the Mac OS at the same time if something doesnt work. Im a huge fan of the ultrabook platform. It has enough power to do anything you need outside of some hardcore gaming. Windows or Mac based ultrabooks are the way to go.

I have had a couple Asus laptops and they are my favorite windows platform. There is no fucking way I would get Windows 8. I have played on it and it sucks. I believe Microsoft will be ditching their Windows 8 platform after the huge backlash

Asus RoG laptops are great, I have a g50 something or other from about 5 years ago and it still works great.

Asus and MSi both make great high end laptops for a fair price.

Windows 8 (especially the whole platform it was built upon) isn't going anywhere. The only backlash people have had to Windows 8 is the native Metro UI, which they anticipated. The thing they didn't anticipate is that most of the backlash was from the business world and in the first major Windows 8 patch (8.1) is reported to have a switch to change the main desktop from Metro UI to the classic desktop. It still probably won't have a start button, but again, that's not people's main concern.

People are just afraid of change and are uneasy whenever new windows features are implemented in favor of older technology that no longer makes sense. Windows 8 is an excellent operating system and a worthy successor to Windows 7. With a few tweaks, Windows 8 outperforms Windows 7 in every way.

Yes, the ASUS laptops are great, they use as many of their own components as they possibly can. The gamine series of laptops are probably your best bang for the buck.

I hope they'll have a similar patch for server 2012. I'm all for getting use to the new metro UI but it just doesn't seem "professional" to have that for a server.
