  • Server 2008 environments

I really need to start putting more time into learning my way around server 2008 where I can set up domain controllers and have a good working knowledge of active directory administration. I know it from a help desk level but I need to expand from there.

Can any of you recommend a good software for server 2008 labs or virtual environment?

I have 2008 setup on my machine via VMWare but I don't know how to setup it to run in a lab environment where it's not looking for an actual domain, users, or workstations.

Why don't you setup your VM machine to be its own Domain Controller for a test Domain?

Also 2003 is very similar with things that affect users such as permissions, groups, and GPOs.

Can I do that if I have it setup on my main computer that I use at home? Any technical language as to what doing that is called? The VM stuff is fairly new to me, I know what it does but managing it is completely foreign territory.

Yes you can. If you want it completely isolated, give it a VM network.

        Here's a good link. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...v=vs.100).aspx

Basically the VMware environment needs to be all on its own network, with no access to your "real" network. Promote one of the 2008 server to be a domain controller.

Thanks for the info Joey. I was hoping to get away with this without needing a second box. Even though I could build a really cheap box for this, it's just money that takes away for an already busy budget.

            Are you using VMWare Workstation?

If so, check out Autolab for vSphere. It is an auto deploy tool for making a vSphere test lab on Workstation, ESXi, or Fusion.

However, once it is setup, it can be used to auto deploy a Win2008 active directory. IMO that is where it will be very helpful to you. Let it setup Win2k8 and AD. Then just pass on the deploying the rest of it.

The documentation also gives good instructions on setting up a virtual network for Workstation..

Which download? The one that says on Workstation 8?

              Nested AutoLab on Workstation 8
Nested AutoLab on vSphere 5 ESXi without DRS
Nested AutoLab on vSphere 5 ESXi with DRS
