My nephew is starting high school this fall and is looking to buy a laptop at Best Buy with some gift cards he has. Any suggestions on something they carry? Looking for something thin, lite weight, and durable (he's tough on his electronics). Thinking a 15" screen, Intel Core i processor (no Atom processor), and somewhere around the $500 neighborhood. Any suggestions?

Would an iPad or other tablet work instead? Does he require USB ports?
First thing is making him strongly respect his equipment, it'll last years but needs to be taken care of properly.

I would step down to something smaller....12-13" screen because they are lighter, smaller, and fit in a backpack much easier. Smaller ones have better battery life too.Comment

The ones I like are all 600-700. I know he has gift cards to there, but also consider Costco - excellent warranties.
Either way, in that 400-500 range you're generally going to get the same crap.
I did see 3 refurbs, with the 8 gigs of RAM as opposed to 4. Since all in that price range will generally have low end/crappy drives and GPUs - 8 gigs of RAM is one good benefit to have.
Not sure if this link will show the correct page - if it does the first three with 8 gigs of RAM is worth looking at...
