  • galaxy note 1 w/ICS GPS issues?

For those of you that have Galaxy Notes from AT&T that upgraded to ICS, who has issues with the GPS not locking onto satellites? If you had the problem, did you fix it by rooting and using the GPS fix apps?

I've been frustrated with my note GPS for many months and research today leads to the ICS upgrade. The suggested app requires rooting which I have not done.

    Frustrated....help!

After have a long time dealing with no gps lock with my phone I thought I would check inside and make sure the contacts were ok to the antenna. well come to find out they looked like they weren't even fully contacting the antennas contacts any...

GPS fix....if you have weak or non existing gps lock try this fix!

I'm about to do this to mine. I've dropped it several times recently and gps went to crap. Thank God for the case because you'd never know by looking at the phone that it had been dropped.

All done. It took less than 5 mins and all I used was a small jeweler's philips screw driver and my thumbnail to pry the top portion of the case open. You don't need to fully remove the back, just enough that you can gain access to those two contact points and gently pry them up a lil.
This was sitting in my living room.

same 5 minutes...seemed easy and backed up one site I found about tightening the screws....however, no go. GPS test locks on zero sats.

going to look into rooting the phone and trying some of the other options I have found like fast fix and others.

We recently got rid of my wife's S3 because it stopped accepting changes to settings. we were then told you had to root to regain access to the settings so you can actually change them again. Supposedly even though the GPS symbol is on, the system is not turning the gps device on. At least that is what I am finding on several Note/ICS forums because if they revert back to Gingerbread, the GPS works perfectly.

Honestly, my best option to hold out the 5 months till my discounted upgrade is to downgrade back to Gingerbread and find a better email program that didn't frustrate me so much. The better native email client was the only reason I upgraded to begin with.

I will say this, we sold the S3 to best buy for something like $330 and got my wife the Note 2....BIG improvement. I will likely be doing that same swap in October but have to be able to live with this device till then and a working GPS is key to it not getting destroyed.

BTW...thanks for posting that link. It was an option I had not found yet and was worth the try.

Install this, open the app and make sure the service is started. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...c21vbml0b3IiXQ..

Does it show any sats in view? If not, Backup everything you'd like to save and I'll link you to the files to do the Jelly Bean update as a clean flash, not an upgrade.

I had the same problem as you when I did an upgrade to ICS over top of GB. It's a modem thing. Heck, you could root and flash the GB modem from recovery and regain flawless GPS. Lemme know which you'd prefer to do and I'll provide the links.

I've been using GPS Test and it shows up to 20 in view, but zero in use. Funny thing is that it suddenly showed 6 in use a minute ago. Went to maps and it tells me that my position is temporarily unavailable.

I have considered upgrading to Jelly Bean but have read that it slows the unit down. Does JB actually fix the GPS issue?

I went to Best buy Mobile and Game Stop today to see what I could get for the phone and it's pathetic compared to what the Note 2 will cost me without and available discounted upgrade.

Going to have to make this thing last another 5 months. If JB is the answer, I'll do that. Otherwise I will go backwards. I already backed up the device on Kies this morning so I will figure something out after I finish up work today.

The easiest thing to try would be rooting and flashing the GB modem first. If that doesn't do it, and it should, a full revert would certainly expose defective hardware.

You are sort of speaking greek to a non-tech person but I think I understand it. I can usually follow guides in the web but I just don't trust many of them anymore.

If you can provide known good links on how to do this, that would be great.

                  Thanks!

GB modem link <-- dl and save to your desktophttps://www.dropbox.com/s/a5wogrfzqi...dem.zip?v=0mcn

https://copy.com/n0ZX3HLm9jLkCKlV <-- dl and extract/unzip with winrar to a folder on your desktop.

Open the folder called Odin and double click on the Odin exe. Reboot your phone into download mode, you can do this by pressing and holding down the Volume Up and Power buttons. Once you see a Warning! screen, press the Volume Up button to enter Download Mode.

Now connect your phone to the pc, once a yellow bar shows up in Odin saying COM:... click the check-box that says PDA, then browse to the folder you made earlier on your desktop.

Locate the openrecovery-twrp file and select it. Click the START button in Odin. When it's done, your phone will reboot.

Upon boot completion, copy the UPDATE-SuperSU and i717-GB-Modem files to your phone, preferably NOT in a folder.

Now hold down Volume Up, Volume Down and Power button together until your phone resets, then let go of Power button while holding down the Volume Up button. You should now have a blue/black screen that says TEAM WIN or TWRP2 on it.

On the next screen, touch Install then locate the UPDATE-SuperSU file, touch it then wipe to confirm/flash.

Reboot again, open the Play app and install this to make rebooting to recovery/download mode simpler. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result
Once installed, run Powertool, select Reboot Recovery.

Once in recovery, touch Install and locate the i717-GB-Modem file, select it and swipe to confirm/flash.

Reboot for the last time, once it's done booting test GPS.

Post back if you have any questions and or w/your results. It may look/seem daunting, but it's really not. I just tried to be as descriptive as possible.

                      cool.

before I start all that, will the backup on Kies work with all this other software once things are flashed or should I back it up in something else?

                      Thanks a bunch!

Baring an unforseen mishap(see: phone disconnects/gets disconnected during the pc to phone flash causing a brick), this won't wipe anything, just roots the kernel and changes the modem.

I almost forgot to mention, make sure you have at least 30% battery life before doin any of this. This will also enable you to make a full system image/backup of the phone in the state it was at reboot, from within recovery. It also will enable you to try different roms.

Dadgumit, and u reread it several times. Continue holding both volume buttons after you release the power button. Sometimes it takes a few trys to get it, but that's the proper 3 button combo.
