The points system is hard to pin down to pure points because each infraction is a multiple (1x-4x, varying from dropped wheels up to solid contact with another car), which is then multiplied by another multiple depending on when the infraction happens (race is 1x, warmup is .5x, qualifying is .5x), and then that's multiplied by some mystery multiple of the number of corners you complete in the race and the distance of the race.

My best guess is that, if you run a completely clean race, you'll get somewhere between +0.2 and +0.3 safety points on an average track.

I had the misfortune of dropping several points in my first few races as I got used to the realities of wheel to wheel racing in something that wasn't GT5/Forza, so I had a hill to climb, but after that I've been pretty good. Still dropping too many wheels, but I still pick up ~+.15 safety points each race. There's no assignment of blame for incidents, though, so getting tagged, even if it's not your fault, can easily scrap your safety points for a race.
So if someone runs into the back of me it dings me as well? That fucking sucks!

Yeah. It's rough at first, but the end result is that you quickly learn to avoid those situations entirely. The first couple of corners is always the worst. I went from 7th to 1st within the first 3 corners in a race I did yesterday, wound up finishing 3rd, and probably only had the 6th or 7th fastest lap time of the race (and those that were quicker than me were MUCH quicker).

All of that said, I don't want to make it sound like it's a free-for-all. The first week of the rookie season was rough, but after that most of the racers have toned things down a bit. Most rookie races have one big incident at the beginning, generally occurring back in the pack, and then they're clean after that; the plus side is that, if you make it a point to make it through and you're reasonably quick, you're guaranteed a good finish. I suspect my pending promotion to D-Class will see that one big incident at the beginning disappear.

Keep me updated, I'm interested in iRacing and I'm looking for the opinion of the game from someone I know when out of the rookie ranks.

What car/series are you running regularly?

MX-5 Cup is the only road race series open to Rookies; looking at buying the Skip Barber Formula car for next season. I'll continue running the MX-5 Cup until I'm near the top times, though, which may be a while.

Are those cars fixed setup, or can you adjust on 'em?

Depends on the series; MX-5 Cup is fixed.

Cool. I really want to get in on that, but I've got no business spending that kind of money right now. lol

3 month free trial + pick up a used DFGT setup for like $20 = profit?

Alright, perhaps that estimation was way off; looks like they're ~$70 used.

I'm on Forza, it's just a better sim imho. Longest lasting racing game I've ever had. Is the next Forza scheduled to release on the next system, or the 360? Anyone know?

There's nothing about the sim aspect that's better. Car selection, modifications, graphics...sure. But physics? It's not even close. Especially after doing a good amount of driving on iRacing, which is far more deserving of the description "sim" than either GT5 or Forza, GT5 still comes way closer to being the real McCoy.

That may be true, but GT5 sucks, haha. It never kept me interested, just the design of the game and it's progression. I think a lot of people would agree.

I use to play LFS a lot online and did pretty well, but I don't have time for PC Games anymore, fiddling with the various crap involved. I only have time for a console game every few weeks.

i bought gt5 when it came out but failed to really get into it despite logging quite a few hours on it.
i hated the layout and navigation of the game and the spec b shit. i also hate the challenges and car specific races.
the actual racing i thought was pretty good, a bit easy. good cars, graphics and decent physics.

                                didnt care for forza either.

                                personally i preferred f1 2010 (ps3) despite being broken crap then f1 2012 (pc).

i use a logitech dfgt as well. i wish i spent more and got the g27.

i should get iracing as well but last i looked physics looked great but graphics looked horrid.
