  • Upgrading my desktop

I am looking to upgrade my desktop computer a little. I built it several years ago, here are the specs:

    Asus M2N-E mobo
    AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200 (2.2 Ghz Windsor chip)
Memory is 2 gigs of DDR2-667 latency is 5-5-5-15 (per cpuz)

I plan to run solidworks and adobe creative suite on this machine so upgrades that would improve the performance of those programs would be great. I know the memory needs to be increased. I am running a 64 bit OS so 8 gigs of memory should be recognized. Not looking to break the bank but would like some increased performance

HDD's are all SATA, IIRC CD/DVD drives are SATA as well. Graphics card is a geforce 7300. Power supply is an enermax eg495P 485W unit

As for budget, not looking to spend enough to buy a new computer, 100-150 max.

You're not gonna do much with a buck fiddy upgrading your current rig or new. Ddr2 ram is ridiculously priced and your bound power wise w/that psu.

I have a phenom 2 X4 940BE that might work in your mobo, but w/out knowing what it is, I could only speculate.

If I can spread it out, I can afford to put more into it. I thought I had 4 gig's of ram in this thing, but I guess not. It has been 6-7 years since I put it together.

The mobo is an AM2 board, a quick google search shows that the board will support it architecturally, though it requires a bios update. Though I am seeing mixed reviews

I was wrong on the memory latency, the chips I have in the board are Corsair cmsx1024-5400 units. Latency is 4-4-4-12 though cpuz is showing them running at 5-5-5-15

The cpu, if supported, would be a rather decent upgrade for you. Your ram timings are irrelevant to this since it's not a discussion on trying to achieve a big oc.

If you can spare a lil more money, it might be advantageous to get an A10-5800K+mobo combo and ram. Goin that route gives you better cpu, gpu and ram.

                Here's an AMD based mobo/cpu/RAM combo for 195 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...=Combo.1225938

And a bit of an upgrade for 250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...=Combo.1245724

I may have to put it on the back burner and just live with it for now.

Where are you located? If you wanna see how much this Phenom would help, your welcome to try it.

I'm in Greenville and rarely get to the metroplex.

Finally landed a decent paying job. So I will be able to upgrade mobo/cpu/ram in a month or two hopefully. Its a bit agonizing running solidworks on 2 gigs ram.

Thanks. I appreciate the offer. I may need some help matching components. It has been a LONG time since I was immersed in this stuff. I put the current set up together.
