  • CCNA course.

Can anyone recommend a CCNA course online that has some structure to it? I'm looking for more than just buying a book, reading it, and taking a test.

online, no. All the "online" training I know of is going to be geared towards taking the exam and not really in-depth. I recommend taking classes at a community college for in-depth instruction.

This. Any monkey can cram on a book for half a year or so and pass it. The real benefit of taking the actual courses is getting to actually play around with the equipment and not only learn the commands you will be using, but learn why you use them and what they do. It takes a bit longer, but if you're not in a huge rush, is worth it. Takes two semesters for the CCNA and two more for the NP.
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

I took my CCNA several years ago, studied/passed in 3 months.

I took an exam prep class, that was one week for the CCNA.

The instructor asked me to take the test the day the class started so he knew exactly what labs were being asked in the exam, or if they had changed. I missed passing by 1 question, he told me he would have refunded my class back to me if I had passed.

After the 1 week cram, and lab practice, I aced the damn thing.

I'll PM you the instructors info, I also did my 2003 MCSE + Security, and 2008 MCITP Server Administrator upgrade through him as well. He's local, too. I'm thinking about taking the 2008-2012 upgrade prep through him in January.

Thanks Matt, any info is appreciated. I'd like to be able to commit to a night course but my work schedule is all over the place right now, so I'm stuck with a learning online.

have you thought about building a home lab? I had a similar issue with work schedules when I was taking the college classes so I dropped out of the 3rd class and built the same lab setup the school had. I bought the stuff on ebay, found some cheap pc's on CL, etc. It's a little pricey at first but it works.

The only book that I can think of that's going to be indepth would be this one...

you don't need to build a home lab, you can use the simulations software that's out there

That would definitely be helpful. My ESA guys show me stuff on the side and walk me through setting up network switches and configuring ports now and then, I just need the background knowledge that goes with the action.

I might have a copy of one of the versions of the Sim software I was given at one of the classes I took. I'll check for you Greg.

yeah, that's true depending on the individual I guess. I had a slight disconnect when attempting to use a sim. I'm fine now that I know the info but for some reason, I was more successful at making sense of it all when using actual gear.

If you need to learn the foundational stuff, the books in the link above will solve that problem.

Check out the TCC class at the Northeast campus. They have for college credit classes as well as "continuing education" classes
