Get one of these to extend your range.

He didn't specify what kind of distance he was talking about, weather his shop was attached or detached, computer OS, etc... but I would look at this instead and save some money:

You can mount the antenna outside (it is an outdoor antenna) to pick up your signal and it comes with a 16' long USB cable that you plug directly into your computer. I have been using this for several weeks now here in Afghanistan and it is working awesome!! I have friends using the indoor models, but the signal is weak and drops pretty often. Mine is at 100% signal strength and has not dropped a single time.

If you feel that it is too much, they have other products, both indoor and outdoor with bigger or smaller antennas:

Here is a picture of where I have the antenna mounted (4x4 post on the left at the top of the picture) and you can see my co-worker's indoor Alfa wifi boosters on the top of the other post. The USB cable is long enough to reach from the top of the post to the inside of the conex with the door on it. I can't imagine you needing a longer USB. I don't know exactly where the router that I am connecting to is, but I am pretty sure it is about 75-100 yards away.

True. I've used what I posted at oil field offices with lots of success. You can flash it and jack up the output power
