Newb question on connecting two laptops

I finally broke down and bought a new laptop and now need to move everything over. The old one has Vista Home Basic on it, the new has 7. I can't get them to see each other as I suck at networking them, can't find what the internet says to find.

Can I just plug them together with a cable of some sort? How the hell can I move all my shit over?

Vista and 7 have a feature built in to transfer all your stuff.

Are they both 32 bit Windows?

If you use cable it needs to be an crossover cable.

I'm not going to lie, I'm okay at networking and use a USB/other type HDD when switching from one machine to another...etc...etc.
