  • Computer nerds in here!!!!

Ok, so I am a super casual PC builder compared to the redneck and most of you guys so I am going to cut to the chase here and tell you what I did and you tell me how to fix it. When I built my PC about 2 years ago I only bought 4g of ram for it. Well I want to upgrade that so I bought 16g of ram. I know that the motherboard will support it.

    This is what I bought....

    This is my mobo....

Wen I put the ram in the PC will not boot. I had to put the old ram back in for now. I need to know how to get this running with the new ram.

    My O.S. is win7 64

    Thanks

    Your mobo doesn't support ddr3-1600 unless it's oc'd 1333.

    4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR3 1800(O.C.)*/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066/800 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
    Dual Channel memory architecture

Italicized is max supported speed. Send it back for some 1333.

    EDIT:It's only gonna support 4Gig dimms. You'll need a 4x4gig kit or 2 2x4gig kits.

oh snap, I saw that and thought it meant it will support 1600...... is there nothing I can do to keep this as is? no update to the bios or anything? or is this purely a hardware issue?

Purely a hardware limitation. What processor are you running? You could get another mobo and keep that ram.

I have a AMD 945 phenom II x4 3.0ghz 95w processor, it is a non black edition... can I still overclock it and could I push this ram harder as well? I am not doing either right now. I run a SSD as my main HD and the small amount of ram is really my bottle neck right now. I would love to get that fixed and push it a little bit.

Your only option for OC is via the FSB. Doing so will OC everything else(ram, northbridge) and limits you to how hard it can be pushed.

What are you using for cooling(cpu)? How's the airflow in the case? Tbh, w/out going the route of an unlocked multiplier allowing a decent OC, you're not going to see much difference in the "seat of the pants" feel.

If you have some expendable cash, I'd pony up for a newer processor and mobo.

Well it's an am3 socket processor. What would be a good mobo for me that won't break the bank and will support this ram and maybe even more if I want it later? And at the same time let me keep my processor for now?

My preference is the second one but only cause I have one and have experience with it. The biggest PRO for it is that it supports Crossfire and SLI. The Gigabyte board is great too but isn't as feature rich.

I was looking at the same mobo that you like as well. I also found this processor for what I think is a good price....

or if I really wanted to get nasty with it is there any 6 or 8 core processors that I could get that are worth a shit? Last time I was looking the general consensus was that they were worthless because nothing could take advantage of it.

I'm running the FX-8120@4.3Ghz w/out problems. It's $30 more than what you listed and works well.

You will need some good cooling to attain that level of OC though. I'm using the Corsair H-80 and love it.

In my photoshop class the teacher was telling us today that you only need more than 4 gig unless you run certain programs like engineering. Ones and stuff
