It's odd you're having so much difficulty with this. I think it took me 5 minutes tops to root my Captivate w/ 2.3.5

Not to step on Bryan's tips, but would you like try my method? If so, I'll make a write up.

Yes i would be happy to try both methods in case i keep having trouble . So id be glad to use your writeup . But the reason i have trouble is cause normally im not a computer guy at all . To be honest this is probably the farthest ive ever dived off into such a thing .

Here, just use this oneclick Odin. It's for a custom rom, Mosaic. http://bit.ly/w1V2M9

No problem and sorry if my previous reply came across as short. I'm sorry I didn't help more, but my experience with samsung is very limited. I just recently got a Galaxy Note and it was a 15sec deal to root and flash Clockwork Mod. It took almost half an hour to dl the stuff needed to do it.

If you run into any issues/problems with Mosaic, dl and install Palringo then search for thefamilyroom for support or just to shoot the poo.

Alright ill look into it . If this doesnt work ill probably just give up on root . The phone seems to hate it lol . It seems to resist attempts to be rooted... maybe thats just what the manufacturs want . Who know

Anyway, there were two files in that last download you gave me. Odin and 1 other . I think i finally learned enough but i want to be careful cause i also learned about hard bricks lol . If i understand correctly . What i do is put that M9.tar.MD5 file in the PDA section of odin, then hit start . I think that file is necessary . But im not sure .

A Captivate can be unbricked most of the time, but anyway here's my method. It works on Captivate Gingerbread builds.

                      Follow it carefully!

                      1. Put phone in download mode. There are 3 methods. The one you want to use on the Captivate for best success rate is remove sim/sd/battery. Insert battery > Hold down both volume buttons > Plug in USB
                      2. Unzip Odin3v1.8.5
                      3. Unzip KK4_stock_kernel.zip
                      4. Unzip I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.zip
                      5. Right click and run Odin as Administrator on PC
                      6. Once you see the COM port populate on Odin you're ready.
                      7. PDA button > Browse for I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.rar > Start
                      8. Phone reboots
                      9. *Hit reset button on Odin
                      10. PDA > Browse for KK4_stock_kernel.tar > Start
                      11. Phone reboots
                      12. Unplug USB at AT&T splash screen
                      13. Done! You're rooted. You can now install your sim/sdcard

Go to market and download Titanium Backup. Tip: Make sure Allow Unknown sources for Non-market apps is checked in phone settings as well as USB Debugging every time you use Titanium Backup to remove system apps/backups/restore/DropBox, etc.. Turn back off when done. You don't need SQL Lite, BusyBox, etc..

                      Enjoy free wifi tethering.

This one worked on my phone . Finally . Im starting to think that what the problem is, is some developers dont always add root just right . If they use the wrong method for the wrong phone or the wrong kernel, it will either not work or maybe cause the phone to glitch out . At least that is the impression that i get .

Ls1 i am going to use your method on the wifes phone cause she dont like changes . That other one that txred gave me changes some stuff .

DL and install Titanium Backup(TiBu) and ES File Explorer then dl this folder. Place the three files in the folder on internal sd via ES File Explorer called Titanium Backup. Open TiBu, locate AdAway and touch it, select Restore then App+Data.

Go to your app drawer and open AdAway, touch Download files and apply ad blocking. When it finishes, restart your phone and ads should be gone from everything. If by chance they aren't, post the app name and I'll locate the server and post the line to add to the blacklist.
