  • Anyone here a Mac/Apple gear head?

I was given an Apple G5 with issues. Apparently the previous owner turned it on one day, heard a "pop" and then nothing happened. I've rebuilt and trouble shot more than my fair share of PC's but this is my first venture into the "dark side". Anyone have any ideas or have previous experience w/ Macs? (I'm so Newb I don't know if they are Macs or Apples ....)
    TIA

I've worked with most of them back to the iMac. They aren't too different from their pc counter parts. Can you turn it on?

It turns on but the only thing that happens is the "power" light on the front panel comes on and a red light on the main PCB comes on. (Searching various forums now.... not looking good... )

Edit: Fans to do not spin, nothing from the video, keyboard, mouse. I'd say the thing is screwed but.....

Have you checked the capacitors on the mobo? I had the same thing happen with an old PC of mine and I swapped the RAM, CPU Fan, and PSU, only to find out the damn thing still wouldn't work. Turned out to be a couple of bad capacitors.

One of the companies I contract with also contracts with Apple. It looks like I've got access to some of the service/troubleshooting guides.

There are seven different versions listed:
            Powermac G5 Late 2005
            Powermac G5 Early 2005
            Powermac G5 late 2004
            Powermac G5 mid 2004
            Powermac G5 no description
            imac G5 20 inch
            imac g5 17 inch

If you know when it was made, I may be able to send you the file.

I did actually. I looked, as well as I could, all over the MOBO for pop'd caps. (I've had that happen to me too in the PC world.) The MOBO looks VERY clean. No residual "blast" fragments, smell, or other tell tale left overs of a cap popping.

How do I differentiate between them?

                  Can you post the serial#?

Well shit. As much as it pains me to read this I also appreciate it. Is that really a requirement?

You don't need a mac to develop for iOS. There are a billion articles out there on how to do it on a windows or linux machine. Or look into Adobe AIR, it's a cross compiler that is written in Actionscript, I kid you not it took me a week to learn it (coming from a strong C/C++ and Java background). Code it once and deploy it to Android, iPhone and Blackberry. Pretty well supported too.

What are you looking to develop? Games or utilities? I have a good background in both and can point you in the right direction.

Yes if you're going to use x code then you need Intel. I use titanium studio but for ios you need a Mac with x code. And avoid air and anything flash. That shit is dead.

Nope aaand nope. But sheep do what they are told.

Starling is pure ActionScript 3 and recreates Flash's display list architecture on the GPU providing a performance unlike anything else! Starling runs in the browser and on all major mobile platforms, like iOS and Android.

Here is a great flash engine that has been ported to mobile. Goofy, can you tell me what game you see on the home page? Of course the mobile stuff is cutting edge so all the sheep will tell you it's a bad idea. Starling works flawlessly, and comes with some great examples to get you started.

Also, if you are looking to incorporate physics, Nape integrates flawlessly with AIR.

One last item, why code it three separate times Goofy? Or do you just target iOS and miss out on the revenue of Android and Blackberry?

I'm not sheep so fuck that noise...

Flash is d.e.a.d. You can still do stuff with it but it is not a long term skill.

If you read what I wrote, I use titanium studio which cross compiles to Android and ios. Blackberry? Why bother, they have such a small market share...same with windows phone.

Of course I don't write games... I write business apps so I don't have to sell a million to a million people but just sell licenses to businesses which is more money
