Aquiring network address? WTF

So I have a netgear router sending my internet signal to my netgear wireless adapter and it won't hook up. I searched for a network wirelessly, found my router, entered the passcode, and now it says connected but it can't connect to the internet. I clicked the little icon in the bottom corner and it says aquiring network adress and does that forever, it never finds one. My Xbox picks up that router wirelessly, and I can use the wireless adapter to get on my neibors router if I wanted to but I can't get to my own router on the computer.

There's a Windows security setting that had to be unchecked to eliminate that issue on my office laptop, But I can't remember now exactly what that was. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

^^What he said, a setting needs to be changed.

Pull out your manual and make sure your settings are ok on the router, and see if it says anything specific to your setup.

I assume it has something to do with the firewall or the settings. I'm not very computer savy so it's probably something simple and I'm just being outsmarted, lol.

Uhhhh maybe lol. I tried to turn it off and let is sit for a bit then turn back on and still nada.

No, pull the plug from the router and let it sit for 20-3- seconds.

Flush your DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all

del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Double click on the flush.bat file to run it. Using Vista or Windows 7, right click and choose to run as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

I think this is what I did (for Windows XP)

View wireless network connections
Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab
Select "Properties" under preferred networks
Click the "Authentication" tab
Uncheck "Enable !EEE 802.1x authentication for this network"

What encryption mode are you using? WEP 64 or 128 bit, WPA Personal, WPA2 Personal, etc?? Does your router's SSID have any special characters in it outside of being strictly alphanumeric? You also might be using a network adapter that doesn't support the encryption you are using in the Wireless Security settings in your router. Start over with the basics, just simply as a troubleshooting measure. Disable your Wireless Network security in your router with no authentication, just making it an open network access point. And see if you can log on just by selecting your broadcasted SSID, then see if it works.

Don't worry about flushing your DNS. Simply open up a command prompt and on the PC you are having trouble with and type ipconfig/release. Reboot router. Wait about 30 seconds, then reboot your PC and then find your SSID and attempt to log on, if it doesn't already do that anyway if you have your network as the default Home network.

I was not able to get it to work last night. I know the router works, it sends signals to my xbox and I can get online with that. I know the wireless adapter works because I can get on somebody's unsecure network in my apt complex. I just can't get on my own router with my wireless adapter. I have a friend who is in IT and he said he'll come and look at it for me this weekend. Thanks for everyones help.
