I have been lucky with AVG and microsoft security essentials.

I use Kaspersky for work (paid), and Microsoft Security Essentials at home (free).

From all the different AV tests reports I've read, I always see Norton in the top 3 if not top 5, even though it's a load hog. Bit Defender also seems to get good ratings.

Norton really is as good as the reviews show and hasn't been a resource pig since the 2009 version. Here's a SS of Task Mgr from my XP lappy.

To the OP, IMHO, Norton's Internet Security is top notch for paid. For free, Microsoft Security Essentials is robust and pretty light.

To be fair, I only use Kaspersky because work pays for it, and it works the best for our Enterprise clients.

I use ESET and have never had any issues with it, never really liked any of Norton's stuff.

I've been thrilled with MSE, but not so much the last week. I've got some sort of virus... I keep getting random IE windows opening, and when I do a google search and click on links, it doesn't take me to the page I requested. I've updated defs and run full scans, MSE says I'm clean. This shit is pissing me off

You're going to get differing opinions, but I took the plunge and tried Norton Internet Security in 2009, even w/all the bad cred/publicity. It was the best decision I have ever made for an anti-virus program. As such, I renew every year. Try the how ever long free trial and see for yourself.

It's extremely light, unobtrusive, very effective, updated hundreds of times a day and has kept every pc I've put it on clean.

                            MSE here.

I use the corp versions of mcafee on my servers but mostly because I got copies of it when I worked there.

Surf with non admin rights and keep your stuff patched.

For patching I really like Secunia's Personal software inspector
