  • New Android user here..

Bought the Samsung Skyrocket last night and really digging it (especially the fast connection). My only issue so far is the connection at here really sucks (granted it sucked when I was on my iPhone as well) and cannot get better than an EDGE connection where my desk is. How can I disable 4G/3G on the phone? However it's configured right now I cannot get internet to load at all. I get text messages and periodically get email updates although if I open when with any graphics it chokes and won't load. Any idea how to force an EDGE connection on this phone?

Oh, other issue is it's slow to charge on a USB connection but I figure it's due to the power hungry processor.

You might also try rooting and changing the modem.

I would have figured that but no such option. I have Use Packet Data, Data Roaming, Access Point Names, Network Operators.

Oops, maybe those options are because I'm running a custom ROM. Honestly, rooting is simple and you have to deliberately try to break it (and even then it can be easily un-broken), and flashing custom ROMs after that is simple and equally harmless. And then it's easy to un-root and go back to stock.

I eventually plan to but didn't want to do it right away. Kinda wanted to get an idea what stock Android is like before rooting.

Gotcha. It doesn't sound like there's an easy way to disable it then. Maybe search the marketplace for a "disable 3G/4G"?

Probably wait to root it. Thanks for the help. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

i would just use wifi for all data. Are you losing phone calls as well? Try google voice with the wifi.

Is it only at your place or bad connection anywhere?. I had a problem like that and took my epic touch to sprint and there was a default code that they corrected that was not allowing me to use internet and watch videos.

It's the location that has bad reception and only on that area of the building.

Don't root the damn thing, you gain literally nothing from it but a huge pita. It isn't an iphone.

No way. Rooting lets you install/use apps that you can't use on non-rooted phones, like Titanium Backup. It also allows you to flash custom ROMs and different modems.

While I do root all my phones I stopped with custom ROM's. It was frustrating when simple things like cameras and other thing you take for granted were buggy. I just stick with the original ROM now but still root it for apps like screen shot. I dont think you even need to with the samsung since they can screen shot right out of the box. I would leave it alone personally.

Also I dont think there is a an easy way to turn off 3G/4G which is crap because our tower sometimes loses 3G and if it does I cant even make calls unless I go to 2g only. Never had to on this phone though.
