Only reason I want to root it is so that I can tether off of it. Still haven't found a way to disable 3G/4G. Went downstairs in the cafeteria and had a solid EDGE connection and it worked great but was just slow. At my desk I have one bar of 4G and can't get anything to load properly. No problems with phone calls or text messages, just nothing internet related will load.

Again, this is a problem I only have at work and most everybody knows about it. I'm just trying to get used to my new phone and can't seem to figure this one setting out.

Any chance that your work is scrambling the data signal?

No LOL! Just poor reception inside of my part of the building. I walk down the hallway a bit and I get an LTE connection.

I just stick with the original ROM now but still root it for apps like screen shot. I dont think you even need to with the samsung since they can screen shot right out of the box. I would leave it alone personally.
You're installing the wrong ROMs then.

Only ROM I have ever run was cyanogen mod on my old Nexus One. I ran quite a few versions of it and it always had bugs and I always ended up going back to vanilla. I cant run any now (that I know of) unless I want to lose 3D capabilities on my LG Thrill.

Rooting is just a huge PITA. Seems like people do it just because they've done it on their last phone.

Depending on the phone rooting is real easy. On my LG Thrill I downloaded superoneclick, hooked my phone up and enabled USB debugging, then clicked the root button and it was done. Honestly it was a 1 minute long procedure even counting downloading SOC.

AFAIK superoneclick can root most android phones assuming the bootloader is unlocked.

I'm talking about from the upgrade/compatibility aspect.

Easy root for my skyrocket was as simple as jb'ing my iphones. I don't fuck with custom roms though for the reasons Lason mentioned.
But I use things like Titanium Backup, and a few other apps, so to me it was worth the 3 minutes.

edit: didn't see your post above.

shit, if my samsung wasn't rooted i would have probably destroyed it with a hammer by now. there are still times i barely tolerate it now. hopefully ice cream cock sandwich is better and CM9 will be out soon.

It is, have it on the captivate. Just waiting for the official source from Samsung on the T-Mobile sgs2/skyrocket so all the drivers will work. Some people are working on ports for it, but gsm, data, etc. etc. doesn't work on them yet.

This is driving me nuts. I can't believe I can't disable 3/4G! Internet is pretty much useless for me at my desk. Every once in a while I'll get a bar of LTE and can use it than but it comes and goes.

*#301279# to disable 4g/other settings btw. But I wouldn't fuck with it too much, you can really mess stuff up.

Does that bring up a menu or just disable 4G? Still, this is stupid that there is not a menu option for this.

I think in the app store there is an app its a battery saver app from the dev team but i think it had the option to turn 4g off
