The only regular mobile data I use away from wifi is gps and I assume it's ran by the chipsets in the phone and only the map overlays use data. It wouldn't shock me if I'm wrong though .

That's correct. It gets the location from the GPS chip and the only data it uses is for downloading the map.

Yeah, or get on a value plan, data isn't required on those plans. On classic plans they are required for the life of the contract, though.

What is this value plan you speak of ? I've been with att / Cingular for 14 yrs and haven't looked at the other carriers much .

Right now I'm telling my mom to get her own plan my kids are going to pay for their own go phones my wife is going to get a prepaid phone and I'm happy about not having a cell for a while . My bill just went from $325 a month to $30-$40. I may like it in the stone age.
P.S. My iphone works fine on wifi, and google voice works just fine on my lappy.
grooveip + google voice = free calls.

New plan they came out with, rate plans are discounted, but the phones are full price, broken up into a down payment and 20 payments on the bill. When they phone is paid off, the price drops down to just the rate plan price.

For example, the plan for unlimited talk, text, and the unlimited 2gb data is 59.99 on the value plan. Say you want to get a Galaxy S 2, you would pay $200 for the down payment, then have payments for $20 on the bill for 20 months, making your monthly 79.99 plus tax. Once the 20 months is up you would be paying $20 less a month.

It's kind of hard to explain, but you end up saving money with the value plan in the long run.

That sounds like a pretty smart deal there. Still substidized (sp?) in a way but doesnt appear to be near as bad. One thing I wish local carriers would do is drop the monthly price if people chose to go off contract and buy their phone full price. Sounds like this may be a step in that direction.

Yeah. You can also pay the balance off early whenever you want, then you wouldn't have the payments every month.

The deal I found with t-mobile is $79.00 a month 1000 mins unlimited text and no data if I use my current phones . So right now I'm reading like a mad man trying to figure out a way to unlock the samsung galaxy's and a iPhone 4. Any input would be great . The iPhone is 4.2.1 and BB 03.10.01 . I don't know what info I need to know on the samsungs though.
                    Thanks
