  • really dumb 360 to internet connection question...

my router only has one ethernet outlet, which is occupied by my pc. My 360 is in another room. is hooking this up as easy as getting an ethernet cable splitter, and run one cable to my pc, and another cable to my 360? will this still allow me to operate both pc and 360 at the same time?

...and yes, I am computer challenged.

    wireless router?
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

        several options...

all you need is a simple ethernet switch to connect multiple devices to your single ethernet gateway. sounds like a dsl modem to me or an access point to me, not a typical router. then you can go to a place like altex electronics in carrollton, and cut yourself custom length cat 5 ethernet cable to connect your 360 to the router in the other room. utilizing the switch, of course. they are both cheap.

or, you can use a wireless access point for the 360 and another wap sitting at the router side. wap + pc into switch, then switch into router. an unmanaged switch acts as a bridge and is plug and play. no configuration needed.

in fact, i have an extra dlink des-1105 5 port 10/100 switch sitting in my closet. $10 and it's yours.

whatever you do, don't go out and buy a hub just because they are super cheap. they share bandwidth and result in a lot of collisions(packet errors). a switch will give you dedicated bandwidth on each port.

yeah...no wireless anything in my apartment....my 360 has a wifi adapter on it already, but I do not have a wireless router or any way to provide a wifi signal....and nobody in my apartment complex has an open wifi connection. All I have is a cable modem with one ethernet outlet....can I not use a simple ethernet splitter, and hook both pc and 360 to the same modem?

this is what I'm calling an ethernet cable splitter...

can I plug one of these into my cable modem, run one line to my pc, and another to my 360, and both work properly?

They way link states with with ethernet and CDMA technology those will not work. Either they are a false product or only one device at a time.

For 15 or less you can just get a real switch.

Buy a new wireless router, most (if not all) still have Ethernet ports that can be directly wired. I think I paid $30-$40 for mine and it is good enough to stream netflix on two computers (wired) while playing BF3 on the 360(wireless).
