1. Rooting does happen more than once during the life of your phone, unless I missed something. Which I may have, since I don't invest THAT much time on the subject. I usually have to re-root after an OTA update since I don't run a custom ROM.
2. I invested time/money into Titanium Backup (which does a whole lot more than the name would indicate) and Juice Defender with fairly good success in extended my battery life to acceptable levels. I even crippled JD by not allowing it to control my wireless/cellular stuff.
