  • video card recommendation

so I am trying to find a better performing video card for my new desktop. It's PCIe and I am looking or something that can handle two monitors (one with the white dvi cable and one with the blue 9 pin).

New system is an i7 3.4ghz based setup with a lot of good stuff in it but I cheaped out and bought a very low end AMD card ($25 at newegg) to just get the system up and running while I figured out which video card I wanted. Video speed is dragging the system down according to benchmark program. I'm looking at available cards on newegg and I am lost by so many different cards available and not much time to do the research.

Looking for something that is in the $80-150 range that can do the dual monitors, not have the constant screen issues of the cards I am reading about and can kick out good performance on games. Running two 19" monitors at 1280x1024.

Ideally looking for a 256 bit card with DDR5 ram...might spend more if good reviews.

Most of what I am reading on reviews at newegg is there are several brands that are having cards go bad in a matter of weeks and serious driver issues that cause screen problems. Looking to see what you guys have had good luck with and maybe get a solid suggestion.

occasional games. No massive editing. Just getting poor performance ratings with a system that should be smoking fast and video numbers are nearly as bad as my 2 year old laptop! LOL! Figured improving video performance would up the overall performance a bit.

if you can find a gtx 460 for $100 new i would buy it. maybe locally since it's been replaced by the 560.

it's still $150 on newegg, same price as a radeon hd 6850 which is pretty comparable.

I thought Nvidia needed at least two cards for multi monitor? I know you need two cards for three screens (Nvidia Surround) but not sure on two monitors.

No you need two or three cards for sli or cross bridge. Pretty much any card with dual video ports does multiple monitors

Yeah I know about SLI but I didnt know if you could run two monitors off one nvidia card. I looked it up and you can with no issues.

The reason I was wondering is because I know you cannot run Nvidia Surround (3+ monitors) on any modern Nvidia card but you can do it with ATI cards.

                            ...

Go ahead and spend a little bit more and get a good card. I've got a GTX560 Ti that cost me about $180 after rebate and it will run anything I have with full graphics at 2650x1600. It is a great value. Just look around for a sale.

BTW, I don't have a new CPU. Just an older 9550 Quad core.
